Quebec Cardinal seeks forgiveness for wrongdoing in the church

I really don’t understand why this was necessary. This letter is being used by the Canadian media and special interest groups as an opportunity to publicly bash the church (as if that doesn’t happen enough). The Cardinal should have known that people wouldn’t take his sentiment at face value. The women’s and homosexual rights groups are screaming hypocrisy: “If you don’t hate women and homosexuals, why won’t you allow abortion and gay marriage!?!?”

It’s the typical ignorant nonsense. It really gets on my nerves, too, when the media says that the church has “sinned”. How can the church sin?? Individuals can sin, but the church???

I’m gonna stop watching the news.

I don’t see this as a bad thing. In fact, it is a good start. Let’s face it, mistakes were made. It is refreshing to see authority figures own up to church problems.

It appears to be in the style of JPII, who apologized many times for past Church wrongdoings.

This is a good start to show public forgiveness, but it also needs to be shown with more public compassion, which the public face of the Church appears to be lacking (e.g. same-gender marriage “issue”).

This is actually rare for a Bishop or higher to actually ask for public forgiveness. Usually walls go up to deflect. This Cardinal is doing this similar to what was written about way back in 1993.

I believe we are being forced to our knees, forced to recognize that we are not in charge, but rather God is in charge of the church. We are being forced to recognize that we are human. We are coming to acknowledge and admit that as a church (not just as individuals) we have made mistakes. We have a hard time admitting this.

Yes, we are being called to our knees. I believe this applies especially to bishops, who for so long have carried the trappings of feudal lords with all of the titles and dress and privileges that go along with it. It seems to me that we are being forced to recognize that we do not have much power, and that is all right. We are called to be ministers of the word, of the worship of God, and the service of others. We come before the Lord and cry out, “I am alone and afraid.”

I’m sure it’s refreshing for former Catholics and anti-Catholics. I’m sure they enjoy feeling morally superior to the church.

What would be really helpful is if the Cardinal boldly condemned modern society’s hedonism and the culture of death. He’s very silent about that.

**One of the staples of John Paul II’s papacy was his constant mea culpas to everyone in the world with regard to sins (real or imagined) committed in the name of the Church and in the name of Christ. This went on continuously for twenty-five years. Now the Church has to do it ALL OVER AGAIN?
