QUEBEC CITY, June 17, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Popular Vatican insider reporter Andrea Tornielli has said that the powerful post of head of the Vatican congregation which deals with appointing and assigning bishops, is to be taken by Quebec City Cardinal Marc Ouellet. However, the Archdiocese of Quebec told LifeSiteNews today that the report it is only “a rumor.”

Jasmin Lemieux-Lefebvre, director of communications for the archdiocese, noted that there had been similar rumors about the Cardinal returning to Rome over the last few years.

Tournielli a reporter for Il Giornale, first predicted that the post would be taken by Sydney Cardinal George Pell. Catholic World News reports, however, that, “Although Vatican insiders generally agreed that Cardinal Pell was the Pope’s choice, more recent reports from Rome have indicated that the expected appointment faced opposition, and Cardinal Pell himself was said to be reluctant to leave his current post in Sydney, Australia.”

This is the magnificent Cardinal who addressed the 2010 Canadian Walk for Life participants on the steps of the Canadian Parliament and was excorciated in the secular, specifically Quebec(Please God make them seperate from the rest of Canada)Press for stating the Truths of the Catholic Church and Christ with regard to the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. He stood up to them and made them look like the moral midgets they are,and exposed their venality.WE NEED THIS GOOD MAN IN CANADA!!!NOT ROME.

I have to respectfully disagree Soutane. Yes he is a great Cardinal and you would agree that there aren’t too many Bishops who aren’t afraid to speak the truth publicly. By having him in Rome,** in a key position**, he can effect that change that is so needed. In his current capacity he can’t do that.

However, Cardinal Pell could do that too I think.

Logically,I agree partially with what you say.But by his unflinching speech and contemptuous but humourous dismissal of the professionally "outraged"he sinle handedly put abortion and the debate back in the public eye.All those who parrotted the line."the issue is settled "were stunned by the fact that the issue has not been settled.Look for 40-60,000 participants at next years event. The pro-choice movement in this lawless land needs him here.In Rome he’ll be just another functionary, but here he is a lion that ROARS.

Excellent points Soutane but I still maintain my belief he would be better in Rome. If every Catholic was truly Pro Life, then abortion would be illegal in EVERY country in the world. Now in order to achieve that, it starts at the top and works down. By having him in Rome he would ensure that every Bishop that wants to stay a Bishop put a strong pro life message out. From there it flows to Priests and then the laity. You remember me mentioning about the Oratorians of St. Philip Neri in Toronto. By leading from the top, they were able to create a vibrant parish that were truly living their faith.

Now I believe that the a significant first step victory is going to happen in the USA. Obama is looking pretty good at losing in 2012 and with a possible Republican President, then the next Supreme Court Justice could be Pro life to replace the pro choice ones. Right now even with Kagan on the Supreme Court its still 5-4 Pro Choice with 1 or 2 Pro choice ones set to retire. Having the Supreme Court overturn Roe vs Wade or setting it aside is a first step but an important one and that will have an important impact in our Country.

If this is true, it means there will be some other moves to be made among the Canadian Hierarchy. Who will replace Cardinal Ouellete in Quebec? Also, who will replace 74 year old Cardinal Turcotte of Montreal if he retires as Archbishop next year? I’d hate to see Archbishop Prendergast leave Ottawa, but I’d wouldn’t mind if he were to move to Montreal and eventually get a Cardinal’s hat in four years when Turcotte turns 80.

Too late to edit that last post, but I meant six years. Cardinal Turcotte turns 80 in SIX years. 2016.

I agree somewhat reservedly.I was in Ottawa for the March for Life and this saintly man held the thousands there in the palm of his hand and the March and his statements made headlines across this country shocking pundits, commentators and pro-abortionists-all who thought that the debate was over but month by month, year by year we will get stronger and the youth is flocking to the prolife side to the mortification and chagrin of those murderous grannies who run N.O.W.and its Canadian erquivalent.

This priest is a real two fisted man who made the quebecois media and govt.of Quebec look like fools and moral amoebae.Every Bishop and ArchBishop in Canada should speak with one voice and this Cardinal is the man to give them courage. As one of the flock I’m sick of being out front in this battle that we must win.Our officers,Cardinals,Bishops, and priests must be willing to be martyred physically, emotionally and spiritually for this cause. We need leaders the men appointed by our Pope to chuck the pointy hats and get out into the trenches with the rest of us.But above all bring their crooks and LEAD.

When I read this news I thought the very same thing. Who’s going to help hold the gates of hell closed in Canada if they take him? Don’t take away our good and vocal clergy!

And God knows, Quebec is in huge need of people like him.

This is wonderful news! The only problem is that he is desperately needed in Quebec right now as a strong orthodox voice in that suffering Church. Keep the good Cardinal in your prayers, as well as the Catholics in Quebec.

Amen
but if he becomes in charge of appointing and assigning bishops, wouldn’t that be a good thing? there’ll be more bishops like him because he’ll appoint those bishops

I’d certainly regret seeing him leave Canada, but if he were appointed, I suspect that the Holy Father would have had the Curia identify someone who could continue his witness.

Rome has been good to Canada of late. Our present Archbishop in Vancouver, Archbishop Miller, came to us as co-adjutor from being a Secretary of a Curial Congregation. I can’t see our needs being overlooked should a Cardinal Archbishop move to Rome.

Blessings,

Gerry

I could see Bishop Durocher in Cornwall come to Ottawa if Archbishop Prendergast moves to another post. That said, I’m a bit selfish when I say that I want Archbishop Terry to stay right where he is. Wonderful man, wonderful shepherd.

Then again, he’s done such wonderful work for us in Ottawa maybe he should be able to affect more people through being a Cardinal.

How about Archbishop Richard Siok? 🙂

I’ve know Father Richard for years. As in I started volunteering at Annunciation of the Lord when he was the Priest there seven years ago.

Archbishop Richard Siok would be the very definition of “Force of Nature”. At Annunciation he embraced NET Ministries and the Life Teen program. At St. Patrick’s Basilica he has brought back elements of the Extraordinary Form, including it being offered during this past Lent. One of the best preachers I’ve met, excellent speaker, solid theology, sharp as a tack. And he’s certainly not afraid to take a stand on things. He’s be exceptional.

The only people who wouldn’t like that appointment would be St. Joseph’s (downtown) and most of the faculty at Saint Paul’s University.

That said, keep in mind we have a HEAVY Companion’s of the Cross presence here, and Archbishop Terry is a Jesuit, so having a member of an Order getting the job is possible. Which means that there’s a big pool of high quality people there they can take people them.

“Archbishop” Siok would quickly be standing in front of a human rights tribunal for insensitive comments. Exactly what we need. 🙂

Companions are great, but too soft for my taste. We need a rebel like Fr. Richard.

God bless,

“Archbishop Siok”. Yeah, I can think of more than a few people who would be terrified at that prospect, not only St. Joe’s.

I don’t want to derail this thread, but I found it interesting that St. Pat’s offered an Extraordinary Form mass on Sundays in Lent. Even though they were later in the day, that’s pretty remarkable for Ottawa. That combined with the fact that the 12:15 Sunday mass is now partly in latin and they recently bought copies of the Adoremus Hymnal to replace the old hymnals, I’m wondering if they’re going to start having the old mass there on a regular basis.

Really? I wasn’t shocked at all. Most people think Companions/NET/CCO when you think of Ottawa, but keep in mind that St. Clement’s is thriving, not to mention several ethnic parishes (I live by St. Hyacinth’s and St. Anthony’s). And just because Father Richard supported Life Teen for several years doesn’t mean he doesn’t have traditionalist leanings. The man is a pro for sure and would make a great Archbishop.

So would Father Dan Dubroy, who is without question my favorite Priest in the diocese.

We should make an Ottawa Group or something. I didn’t know there was this many of us here.

All of this speculation being caused by some rumor. Crazy stuff.
