The King’s Mother occupied a very important position at the royal court.

**Bathsheba – mother of King Solomon.
**Although Adonijah didn’t fare so well, it is obvious that Bathsheba had influence over King Solomon.

1 Kings 2:19-20 Then Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, and the king stood up to meet her and paid her homage. Then he sat down upon his throne, and a throne was provided for the king’s mother, who sat at his right. “There is one small favor I would ask of you,” she said. “Do not refuse me.” “Ask it, my mother,” the king said to her, "for I will not refuse you."

Maacah – mother of Abijam, King of Judah.
Abijam died. Then when Asa, King of Judah began to reign, he began by deposing his grandmother Maacah.

1 Kings 15:13 He also deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made an outrageous object for Asherah. Asa cut down this object and burned it in the Kidron Valley.

Athaliah – mother of Ahaziah, King of Judah.
Ahaziah followed the counsel of his mother.

**2 Chronicles 22:3 ** He, too, followed the ways of the house of Ahab, because his mother counseled him to act sinfully.

Nehushta – mother of Jehoiachin, King of Judah
The entire royal court is mentioned together as having surrendered to the King of Babylon.

**2 Kings 24:8 ** Then Jehoiachin, king of Judah, together with his mother, his ministers, officers, and functionaries, surrendered to the king of Babylon, who, in the eighth year of his reign, took him captive.

Note that the King’s mother is mentioned here ahead of the ministers, officers and functionaries.

One implication is that it was also known to the Babylonians that the King’s Mother was a member of the royal court.

Genesis 22 tells us of how God put Abraham to the test. Abraham was to offer up his son as a sacrifice.

Genesis 22:10-12 Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD’S messenger called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" “Yes, Lord,” he answered. “Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.”

The mother of Our Lord, Mary, saw Jesus on the way to Calvary. And she was there at His Crucifixion.

**Matthew 26:53 (Jesus speaking) Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels?

Matthew 27:37** And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.

The gospels do not tell us that Mary asked Jesus to call the angels to stop the Crucifixion.

These few truths are uncontested among Bible-believing Christians.

If I let my mind wander and read between the lines of these truths, I certainly begin to see more than what I learned over the years as a Protestant.

I am currently in RCIA.

I’m also very glad to see this thread because it elaborates on the OT position of the “Giberah” or Queen Mother of Israel. The very position that the Blessed Virgin holds simply because she is who she is.

You watch…we’re gonna get jumped BIGTIME by our resident http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/AN878.gif , but what else is new? This to me, is the most convincing of statements of why Mary can and does intercede for Christians. I love the Blessed Virgin and she never fails to draw me ever closer to her Son.

What do you think of these verses? Jer. 29.2 “This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs , the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem”. Compare this to John 2.12 “After this He went down to Capernaum with His mother and His brethren and His disciples; and ther they stayed for a few days”. I think these verses point to the beginning of the “Kingdom of God” on earth or the Church, with Christ as our King and Mary as our Queen.

I posted the following question at “Ask an Appologist”. But then I saw your post. I haven’t heard from them yet but maybe you can help.

"Hi,
In my RSV/CE Bible Jeremiah 7:18 “The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.”

What is the Lord refering to here by the phrase “queen of heaven” ?"

God bless and thank you,

Sincerely,
  • FranL

Jeremiah**

Introduction**

The Book of Jeremiah combines history, biography, and prophecy. It portrays a nation in crisis and introduces the reader to an extraordinary leader upon whom the Lord placed the heavy burden of the prophetic office. **Jeremiah was born about 650 B.C. of a priestly family from the little village of Anathoth, near Jerusalem. While still very young he was called to his task in the thirteenth year of King **Josiah (628), whose reform, begun with enthusiasm and hope, ended with his death on the battlefield of Megiddo (609) as he attempted to stop the northward march of the Egyptian Pharaoh Neco.

The prophet heartily supported the reform of the pious King Josiah, which began in 629 B.C. Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, fell in 612, preparing the way for the new colossus, Babylon, which was soon to put an end to Judean independence.

After the death of Josiah the old idolatry returned. Jeremiah opposed it with all his strength. Arrest, imprisonment, and public disgrace were his lot. Jeremiah saw in the nation’s impenitence the sealing of its doom. Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem and carried King Jehoiachin into exile (Jeremiah 22:24).

During the years 598-587, Jeremiah attempted to counsel Zedekiah in the face of bitter opposition. The false prophet Hananiah proclaimed that the yoke of Babylon was broken and a strong pro-Egyptian party in Jerusalem induced Zedekiah to revolt. Nebuchadnezzar took swift and terrible vengeance; Jerusalem was destroyed in 587 and its leading citizens sent into exile. About this time Jeremiah uttered the great oracle of the “New Covenant” (Jeremiah 31:31-34) sometimes called “The Gospel before the Gospel.” This passage contains his most sublime teaching and is a landmark in Old Testament theology.

The prophet remained amidst the ruins of Jerusalem, but was later forced into Egyptian exile by a band of conspirators. There, according to an old tradition, he was murdered by his own countrymen. The influence of Jeremiah was greater after his death than before. The exiled community read and meditated on the lessons of the prophet, and his influence can be seen in Ezekiel, certain of the psalms, and the second part of Isaiah. Shortly after the exile, the Book of Jeremiah as we have it today was published in a final edition.

Why does the catholic religion call Mary the ‘QUEEN OF HEAVEN’ ? Don’t we read in the book of Jeremiah where the Israelites worshiped wicked false goddess called the ‘QUEEN OF HEAVEN’ the Israelites were PUNISHED for worshipping her.”

First,** Catholics do not** regard the Blessed Mother of the Lord as a god, or goddess, or anything of the sort!

In the second
place, the fact that a pagan deity was known as the queen of heaven doesn’t mean this term can’t rightfully be applied, in another sense altogether, to Mary. The pagan king of Babylon**, Nebuchadnezzer, is called the king of kings by Daniel (Daniel 2:37), yet this doesn’t preclude Jesus from being called by the same title (Rev. 17:14; 19:16).**

Thirdly, Mary, whom all generations “shall call blessed.” (Luke 1:48) has a legitimate claim to the title ofQUEEN OF HEAVEN . As Christians we acknowledge Christ as the king of heaven (Matt. 19:23-24). and a King of the Davidic Royal line “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David”(Luke:1:32) The Sacred Scriptures specifically refer to Mary as the mother of Christ over 25 times.

QUEEN OF HEAVEN?
The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. (Jeremiah 7:18) (see also Jeremiah 44:17-26) Queen of heaven was a title of the goddess Ishtar; so some anti-Catholics believe that Catholics are really praying to Ishtar because they call Mary Queen of Heaven.

By this line of reasoning we could “prove” that Evangelicals pray to Satan when they call Jesus “the Morning Star”, because “morning star” is the literal meaning of the Hebrew word usually translated “Lucifer” in Isaiah 14:12. It should be obvious that identical titles do not indicate identity of persons; were this so, King Nebuchadnezzar would be Jesus, since both are called “king of kings” (Daniel 4:24; Apocalypse/Revelations 19:16).

** Ishtar does not deserve the title Queen of heaven because** she is not truly the queen of heaven; she doesn’t even exist! But Mary is the queen-mother of Christ, the King of heaven, so she is the true Queen of heaven!

In the Davidic monarchy, the queen-mother, or gevirah (“lady”; feminine form of gevir, “lord”) played a very important role. King Solomon instituted this position when he enthroned his mother, Bathsheba, at his right hand (I Kings 2:19), and all his successors followed his example with their own mothers. This was the kings’ way of fulfilling the Commandment to honor their mothers (Exodus 20:12)

Each time the Bible records a king of Judah, it mentions his mother (see I Kings 14:21; II Kings 14:2; 21:19; 23:36; 2 Ch 22:2) because she was the gevirah, and so had a special place in his court. The prophet Jeremiah sends a warning to both the king and his mother (Jer 13:18), and the Babylonians took both King Jeconiah and his mother away into captivity (2 Kings 24:15; Jer 29:2).

Jesus is the final Son of David, the rightful heir to King David’s throne. He has exalted the Davidic dynasty into heaven itself, thus making it a truly everlasting kingdom (Ps 89:35-37). And, like His earthly forefathers, He has enthroned His Mother, Mary, at His right hand as the Gevirah of the Kingdom of heaven.

And all this comes from one of my favorite sites:

So we see that Mary has a right to the title of “Queen of Heaven” but were does scripture say God say he will have a Queen? In Psalms:45:9,12,17 we read:

Kings’ daughters were among thy honorable women: upon thy right hand did stand the QUEEN in gold of Ophir…even the rich among the people SHALL INTREAT THY FAVOUR.I will make THY NAME TO BE REMEMBERED IN **ALL GENERATIONS: therefore shall the people PRAISE THEE for ever and ever." **

Her name remembered in all generations. Ring a bell? The prophecy comes to fulfillment in Luke 1:48: “For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth ALL GENERATATIONS SHALL CALL ME blessed”. **In the Book of Revelation we read. **

"A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars." (Rev. 12:1-2)

What kind of women wear crowns
? Queens wear crowns, but this woman seems to be crowned with the ‘highest jewels’ of creation, the stars, with the sun itself as her royal robes.

"Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus."(Rev. 12:17)

Satan could not get the woman (enmity Gen 3:16) so he went to fight her spiritual children, Christians, people who bear witness to Jesus the Christ
.

Even Martin Luther preached after his break with Rome on the Feast of the Visitation (July 2, 1532) –

"She, the Lady above heaven and earth, must have a heart so humble that she might have no shame in washing the swaddling clothes or preparing a bath for St. John the Baptist, like a servant girl. What humility! It would surely have been more just to have arranged for her a golden coach, pulled by 4,000 horses, and to cry and proclaim as the carriage proceeded: ‘Here passes the woman who is raised FAR ABOVE all women, indeed above the WHOLE human race.’"

Five years later
, preaching on the same feast day, Luther said

"She was not filled with pride by this praise…this immense praise: ‘No woman is like unto thee! Thou art more than an EMPRESS or a QUEEN…blessed above all nobility, wisdom, or saintliness!’"

(LUTHER’S WORKS 36:208; 45:107 as cited in REFUTING THE ATTACK ON MARY by Fr. Mateo available from Catholic Answers)

MARY** AS THE MOTHER OF CHRIST:**

Matthew 1:18; 2:11; 2:13; 2:14; 2:20; 2:21; 12:46; 12:47; 13:55;

Mark 3:31; 3:32;

Luke 1:15; 2:33; 2:34; 2:43; 2:48; 2:51; 8:20

John 2:1; 2:3; 2:5; 2:12; 6:42; 19:25; 19:26

Acts 1:14

**GOD HEAVILY, HEAVILY (**OVER 25 TIMES) EMPHASIZED THE QUEEN MOTHER IN THE LINE OF DAVIDIC KINGS:

1 Kings 2:19 Bathsheba therefore went unto King Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

1 Kings 2:20 “Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her,*** Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay***.” (Note the intercession of the queen mother to the king) See also:

I Kings 14:21, 31; 15:2,10,13; 22:42;

II Kings 8:26; 12:1;14:2; 15:2, 33; 18:2; 21:1, 19; 22:1; 23:31, 36; 24:8, 12, 15, 18

2 Chronicles 12:13; 13:2; 20:31; 22:2

That’s a TON of scripture that has God recognizing the MOTHER of each king in the Davidic line, after showing that the queen mother takes a seat at the right hand of the king.

Jeremiah
Chapter 44

8

Will you go on provoking me by the works of your hands, by sacrificing to strange gods here in the land of Egypt where you have come to live? Will you be rooted out and become a curse and a disgrace among all the nations of the earth?

13

Thus will I punish those who live in Egypt……

15

From all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to strange gods, from all the women who were present in the immense crowd, and **from all the people who lived in Lower and **Upper Egypt, **Jeremiah received this answer: **

16

"We will not listen to what you say in the name of the LORD.

17

Rather will we continue doing what we had proposed; we will burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, as we and our fathers, our kings and princes have done in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. Then we had enough food to eat and we were well off; we suffered no misfortune

24

Jeremiah said further to all the people, including the women: Hear the word of the LORD, all you Judeans in the land of Egypt:

29

That you may know how surely my threats of punishment for you shall be fulfilled, this shall be a sign to you, says the LORD, that I will punish you in this place.

30

2 Thus says the LORD: See! I will hand over Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, to his enemies, to those who seek his life, just as I handed over Zedekiah, king of Judah, to his enemy and mortal foe, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon (pegan king)

**Gen 3:14-15 **

Then the Lord God said to the serpent: "… I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel."

**Is **7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.

Matthew begins his genealogy with Abraham and ends with Mary**. **

**Mt 1:16 **

Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.

**Mt. 1:18-25 **

**… When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. … the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.**She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." He (Joseph) had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

**Mt 12:46-50 (Mk 3:31-35) **

While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. … And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother."

**Lk 1: 26-38 **

…(The angel Gabriel said) “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you … The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” … Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word."

**Lk 1:39-45 **

**… When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? … Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” **

**Lk 1:46-49 **

And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name."

**Lk 2:1-19 **

… Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger … (Shepherds) went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant … Mary kept all these things (that the shepherds told her), reflecting on them in her heart.

**Lk 2:33-35 **

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

**Lk 2:48-51 **

When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

**Jn 2:1-12 **

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” (And) Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” … Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. After this, he and his mother, (his) brothers, and his disciples went down to Capernaum** and stayed there only a few days.**

**Jn 19:25-27 **

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

**Acts 1:12-14 **

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. When they entered the city they went to the upper room where they were staying. … All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

**Rev 12:1-5 **

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. … She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne.

**Don’t confuse the pegan goddess in Jeremiah **with Mary the mother of God!

…but…uh…maybe you could go back and re-read my question and then pick out the part of your reply that you feel best answers it and let me know what you came up with. In one short, easy to follow reply. :ehh:

I do sincerely appreciate the effort you put into that reply. :tiphat:

Sorry about that FranL,

I wasn’t responding to your post. I was providing general information regarding the “Queen of Heaven” of the Old Testament (Jeremiah 44) in relationship to Mary the Mother of God in the New Testament. There are anti-Catholic individuals who claim the pagan goddess (Dianna) described in the Old Testament as the “Queen of Heaven” is Mary the Mother of God of the New Testament (Revelations 12:1-5) and use Jeremiah 44 to say that Catholics will go to hell for veneration of Mary, “the Queen of Heaven”.

If you read Jeremiah 44:17-23 and Revelations 12:1-5 and were unfamiliar with history or the bible in context you might come to the wrong conclusion that these were the same person. I’ve been asked “why do Catholics pray to Mary?” “and “Why do they call Mary the Queen of Heaven, have you read Jeremiah 44?” I was just defending Mary because I know the title of this thread – “Queen of Heaven – Old Testament” to some, mean Anti-Catholic “Proof” that veneration of Mary is somehow a sin. It’s not!

Thanks for your post. Once again I apologize and I will try to keep it short next time. May God Bless You!
Jeremiah 44:17-23

17 Rather will we continue doing what we had proposed; we will burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, as we and our fathers, our kings and princes have done in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. Then we had enough food to eat and we were well off; we suffered no misfortune.

18 But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we are in need of everything and are being destroyed by the sword and by hunger.

19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out libations to her, was it without our husbands’ consent that we baked for her cakes in her image and poured out libations to her?"

20 To all the people, men and women, who gave him this answer, Jeremiah said:

21 Was it not this that the LORD remembered and brought to mind, that you burned incense in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem: you, your fathers, your kings and princes, and the people generally?

22 The LORD could no longer bear your evil deeds, the horrible things which you were doing; and so your land became a waste, a desert, a thing accursed and without inhabitants, as it is today.

23 Because you burned incense and sinned against the LORD, not obeying the voice of the LORD, not living by his law, his statutes, and his decrees, this evil has befallen you at the present day.

Revelation 12:1-5****
1 A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

2 She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.

3 Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems.

4 Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth.

5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne.

1 Samuel 8: 1 - 22 - Study This Chapter 1 Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, "Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.
