The King’s Mother occupied a very important position at the royal court.
**Bathsheba – mother of King Solomon.
**Although Adonijah didn’t fare so well, it is obvious that Bathsheba had influence over King Solomon.
1 Kings 2:19-20 Then Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, and the king stood up to meet her and paid her homage. Then he sat down upon his throne, and a throne was provided for the king’s mother, who sat at his right. “There is one small favor I would ask of you,” she said. “Do not refuse me.” “Ask it, my mother,” the king said to her, "for I will not refuse you."
Maacah – mother of Abijam, King of Judah.
Abijam died. Then when Asa, King of Judah began to reign, he began by deposing his grandmother Maacah.
1 Kings 15:13 He also deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made an outrageous object for Asherah. Asa cut down this object and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
Athaliah – mother of Ahaziah, King of Judah.
Ahaziah followed the counsel of his mother.
**2 Chronicles 22:3 ** He, too, followed the ways of the house of Ahab, because his mother counseled him to act sinfully.
Nehushta – mother of Jehoiachin, King of Judah
The entire royal court is mentioned together as having surrendered to the King of Babylon.
**2 Kings 24:8 ** Then Jehoiachin, king of Judah, together with his mother, his ministers, officers, and functionaries, surrendered to the king of Babylon, who, in the eighth year of his reign, took him captive.
Note that the King’s mother is mentioned here ahead of the ministers, officers and functionaries.
One implication is that it was also known to the Babylonians that the King’s Mother was a member of the royal court.
