Hi,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Mass. I started going again this month. I have a question that I never knew, but should have, growing up Catholic.

There is a sign that people make during Mass. It isn’t the Sign of the Cross. It’s the one where people touch their forehead, lips (I think), and chest. Can anyone tell me what this means, and the correct way it is to be done? I honestly couldn’t remember ever learning it, although I remember people doing it way back when (and wondering about it then too, but I never asked).

Sorry to sound so ignorant, but if I don’t ask, I’ll truly never know! Plus I felt awkward at Mass when I wasn’t sure what to do.

Thanks,
Aunt Martha

In my parish we do that at the beginning of the Gospel. Simply make a small sign of the cross on your fore head, on your mouth and on your heart. Someone else can tell you what it means. Hope I am of assistance

HI Aunt Martha:

When the priest is going to read the gospel, the congregation makes a small sign of the cross on the forehead, on the lips and on the chest. I was taught that we say (silently) as we do this, “May the word of God be in my mind, on my lips and in my heart”.

Hope that helps! Welcome home!

Thank you both! What a relief to finally know this!
