I have not studied the etymology of “compunction” but I do see the similarity to “puncture” in it. Even in German, “Punkt” is a “point” which can apply to physical objects such as swords. Could the usage be in the realm of a sword “puncturing” Mary’s soul?

I think the meaning for the Orthodox is more like what George posted - the puncturing of our false pride, the pricking of our conscience.

If you can take your time, and translate the following link, St Basil may be of help.
“un corazón compungido” , that is the reference of the heart you ll be looking for.
I couldn’t find any better in English for you, Tis.

Here is the specific part translated:

“ Among human riches and worries, between ties to the world and human customs, you cannot achieve ( un corazón compungido)a heart that is humble, free from anger, sorrows, worries and, in general, from all the dangers and agitations of the soul »(Saint Basil the Great, The path of holiness).
