I am a Syro Malabar Catholic and the godparents I plan to choose for my child’s baptism are members of a non catholic eastern church ( Malankara Orthodox Syriac Church). Would like to get clarification on following ,
a) Are there any issues in godparents being non catholic of an eastern church ?
b) Canon 685 (CCEO) says “For a just cause, it is permitted to admit the Christian faithful of another Eastern non-Catholic Church to the function of a sponsor, but always at the same time with a Catholic sponsor.”
Is it mandatory that there need to be at least one Catholic sponsor ? If so, is there any way to get hierarchy level permissions ? How many sponsors its possible to have for a baptism ?
Please guide !
