I am a Syro Malabar Catholic and the godparents I plan to choose for my child’s baptism are members of a non catholic eastern church ( Malankara Orthodox Syriac Church). Would like to get clarification on following ,

a) Are there any issues in godparents being non catholic of an eastern church ?
b) Canon 685 (CCEO) says “For a just cause, it is permitted to admit the Christian faithful of another Eastern non-Catholic Church to the function of a sponsor, but always at the same time with a Catholic sponsor.”

Is it mandatory that there need to be at least one Catholic sponsor ? If so, is there any way to get hierarchy level permissions ? How many sponsors its possible to have for a baptism ?

Please guide !

The canon is current and the requirement is for validity. In the Ecumenical Directory item 98 upholds that sponsers should be members of the Church or Ecclesial Community in which the baptism is being celebrated because they are representatives of a comunity of faith standing as guarantees of the candidate’s faith and desire for ecclesial communion. But as long as one Catholic sponser exists, the non-Catholic may witness. There must be provision for the Catholic education of the newly baptized and clarity that the sponser is suitable for Orthodox to be a sponser (not just a witness) along with a Catholic.
