so I went to mass tonight and went in the confessional and confessed all my sins that i could think of and went to the chapel to pray. There I meditated in silence when I possibly came across a sin that did not occur to in the confessional. I mean if i had thought harder about it before entering the confessional i might have seen it but I tried to get in and out so not to hold anything up. Is that sin and was it wrong for me to take bread?
I’m not even sure if it was a sin that came to mind, but its still something I don’t like.

I Just want to do it all right. Being human is really no fun.

It’s not acceptable to receive the Eucharist(“the bread”) unless you have already received your First Communion- either as a kid(7-8 years old) or as an adult through RCIA(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).

If you have gone through either of these then you would have been taught that it’s not just ‘bread’ but Jesus Himself under the appearance of bread and wine = It’s more than a symbol.
Also you might want to end a confession with a general statement of sorrow for any sins that you forgot. Something like, “I’m also sorry for all the sins I have forgotten since my last confession”.

If at the time you realized that receiving the Eucharist was forbidden either by being in a state of serious sin called mortal sin or by never going through the appropriate preparation then that could itself be a moratl sin and you may need to go back and confess that. But if you lacked knowledge here and you have already received your First communion then you’re OK to receive again on Sunday.

yeah i am well versed in all that and yes I already had my first communion. My question was quite specific to. and yes i end my confession with “and I am sorry for all that I have done and failed to do”. but my question was specific to the fact that I remembered something after the confessional was I still under sin and thus not supposed to receive the Eucharist? could I be guilty of not doing a good examination of the conscious or something and this rendering my confession invalid?

I also had a question about what i read in the catechism under this subject. maybe you can help me interpret it. this under VII “acts of the penitent” 1453 second edition by Pope John Paul II. states
“The contrition called imperfect contrition or attrition is also a gift of God, a Prompting of the holy spirit. It is born of the consideration of sins ugliness or threatening the sinner (contrition of fear). Such a stirring of conscience can initiate an interior process which, under prompting grace, will be brought to completion by sacramental absolution.** By itself however, imperfect contrition cannot obtain the forgiveness of grave sins, but it disposes one to obtain the forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance.”**

does that mean you don’t receive absolution for sin unless contrition is perfect or does it mean with imperfect contrition and going to confession you are absolved where as just perfect contrition alone can absolve you?

The latter.

If your heart was sincere and you legitimately forgot something but included the general statement of sorrow for ALL your sins then you are fine. No worries. A poor examination cannot invalidate the sacrament–lacking proper disposition can-that is -not having contrition at all.

Both(either one)

*imperfect contritiion *which is sorrow out of fear of punishment or perfect contrition which is sorrow because it offends God whom you love are acceptable in the sacrament and qualify as proper disposition.

Based on what Im hearing I wouldn’t stress about it. it could lead to scrupulosity.

Forgive me…perhaps this is a bit off topic, but I simply must address the fact that you referred to receiving the Body of Christ as “taking bread”.

What appears to be bread is no longer bread. It simply holds the shape and form of bread. It is, however, the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Semantics are incredibly important, despite what some may say. You are not taking bread, you are not just partaking in a meal to remember some one, you are taking part in the sacrifice of Calvary, re - presented (not represented) in an unbloody fashion.

I feel better now…thank you.

Adam, I am with you. When I saw “take the bread” I thought what is this man talking about, does he not know better. This is also a pet peeve of mine. We do not receive bread and wine because through the miracle of transubstantiation, that is not what it is any longer. The appearance remains, but it is now fully and completely, the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ and nothing else. it is not both bread and wine and the body and blood. Bread and wine no longer remain. I would ask any of you who read this to please be aware of the choice of your words. Many ask if you do not believe it is bread and wine why do you call it that. Some call it that through ignorance, others through disbelief and or mockery. We are all ignorant about certain things. That is correctable. God Bless

well I am really sorry if i offended anyone by saying bread but simply put thats just another way of saying Eucharist to me I didn’t mean by it to lower the status. I obviously must believe its something more if I am asking you if I am worthy of receiving it. On that note I would appreciate it if you would just answer my question and not stray from it by instead insulting me and my wording. receiving bread is one way that someone can say receiving the Eucharist it does not degrade what it is because I am not intending it to degrade it and you would see that if you paid attention to my question about receiving it. I know exactly what it is I don’t need a lecture.

New One,
  1. Referring th the Eucharist as just the “bread” is not acceptable. Simply because that is not what it is.
  2. To answer your question, if you did not purposefully withhold mentioning a particular sin during confession and remembered it later. It is OK to receive the*** Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist, Holy Communion *** The sin however must be confessed at your next confession. Point out to the confessor that you had forgotten that sin in your last confession and that you had received the ***Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist, Holy Communion. *** Does that answer your question?

newone the folks around here take the technical jargon very seriously as it should be so as not to lead others astray. Around he you will get knocked down and put in your place if you are wrong. CAF can be a tough place. Don’t take it personally.

Yes, please don’t take correction personally. As you can imagine, we get a lot of folks here that are exploring Catholicism for the first time. It is incredibly important to us that the terms be correct, as words are INCREDIBLY powerful.

Thanks for being here and welcome. We appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Being well versed you should know that you didn’t recieve any bread because there was no bread present.

Your absolution was valid, if there was either perfect or only imperfect contrition. If you recalled another sin afterward, you must mention it to the priest at your next reconciliation. It remains a valid sacrament.

Mention it to the priest next time and it will be cleared up to your satisfaction.

Christ’s peace.

If you genuinely forgot the sin and recalled it later it was ok to recieve the Eucharist as long as you intend to confess the forgotten mortal (doesnn’t apply to venial sin) at your next available opportunity.

Please try to understand what you are being shown with this “bread” vs Eucharist business. It stuck out like a sore thumb and made me wonder if you were a fully recieved Catholic as well. It is important. We don’t take anything we recieve it. It is never bread after the consecration.

This was just fraternal correction you have gotten. Not a major put down. Remember , those that do not understand the basics are reading these threads.
