Firstly, I would very much appreciate your prayers, as DH got a lead for a job that would really be ideal for us at this point in time - it’s very close to us so his commute would be much shorter than it currently is, it covers pretty much the exact type of work DH has always wanted to do (he’s in a related position now but it’s not exactly the same), and, for those of you familiar with our financial situation, it would likely lead to a fairly significant increase in our household income. DH also meets the stated qualifications so I am tentatively hopeful (and praying really, really, really hard ;)).

In addition to your prayers, I have a question for some folks who are more seasoned in the workforce than I. In addition to submitting his application and resume, DH is considering calling the person running the job search (who would also be his supervisor if he were hired). He knows the person professionally and they have a cordial relationship (not uncommon for his field, and we are not dealing with large, corporate environment HR departments here or an outside hiring firm.) Mostly he wants more details about the position, but also he wants to put his name and voice to his application, because he feels it will give him an advantage in hiring. While I know that DH has been very successful professionally thus far in his career in terms of getting contacts, having a charismatic personality, and knowing how to talk to people, I’m concerned he might be overplaying his hand and look like he’s trying to kiss up or pull strings. So I’m concerned that what he thinks will be an asset may actually hurt him in the application process even though he already knows the person and they are friendly and respect each other.

But I’ve been less active in the paid workforce so I could also not know what I am talking about at all. :o Thoughts?

I’d do exactly what your DH is doing.

If he knows this person personally then there is no problem calling.

There is a way to call about a job and look professional which impresses employers and ups a candidates chances. There is also a way to call and look like you are kissing up. Sounds like DH knows how to do it professionally and I would encourage him to do so.

Thank you all for your responses, they’re very reassuring. 🙂

I’ve been pretty successful with interviewing and such too (at least as far as it goes), but I’d never had the opportunity to network in the same way and didn’t have connections built up the way he does. I’m also more socially reserved than he is and don’t have the same knack with people, so I know it would probably not be the kind of thing I could “pull off” even if I did know the person.

It’s good to know that his instincts are probably right on. So I’ll do my part and continue to pray! 👍

Yes, I think it’s a good idea for him to connect. Sometimes that can make all the difference. I hope it works out!

That sounds amazing!

I hope he gets it.

I think that praying is the best thing you could do. One piece of advice (which I know you did not ask for): As a person who struggles to get a better job, there is NOTHING more annoying than being told what to do by someone who themselves don’t have to do it. I know you are a married couple that needs to discuss things…nonetheless, it is really easy to give an opinion. Put yourself in DH’s shoes, he is the one doing it and he needs the vote of confidence he is doing his best (especially from you) even if he does not get the job

If he didn’t call it might look like he’s avoiding calling the supervisor. That could set other wondering in motion. It’s much better to alleviate any doubts that he’s not avoiding direct contact, really wants the job, and that their professional relationship is a strong plus in already having open communications rather than having some tentativeness to call.

Yes, a call or Email is not only something he can do it is something he should do. MY wife just got a new job and had about 4 job offers to choose from. She would have had none of them if not for personal contact with the managers.

Pretty much every single job I’ve ever had that I wanted to get…I was hired because I made phone calls inquiring about the position and to continue to express my interest in being hired.

It was advice I got from my mother.

I’d tell her I wanted a job and was planning on putting in an application…the first thing she’d say was “make sure you call them after you hand them your resume and application”.

It’s always worked for me.

Yes. These days it is called “networking” and I can’t imagine a job search without it. Many times resumes just get sifted by HR anyway. So telling the hiring manager to pull your resume is important.

Agree. Continued prayers to St. Joseph for your husband to secure employment.

Pull as many strings as possible. Even get mutual friends/acquaintances to make a call. Every little bit helps .

Contacts are very important. All my jobs so far have been through contacts. It increases your chances significantly.👍

Update:

DH called the contact for this job, but he is out on vacation until right before the applications are due. DH left a voicemail but is going ahead with submitting the application because he isn’t sure if/when contact will get back to him and does not want to miss the deadline.

DH also heard about another possible job and will be applying for that one as well, but right now it seems more like it’s intended as an entry level position and is about as far away as his current job, so it’s unlikely to be the move he wants right now. He also knows someone there and is planning on getting more information to see if his instincts are correct.

I have been praying and DH has asked me to look over his resume, etc. to check for spelling errors (those English teacher skills coming in handy. ;)) Otherwise, I am trying to stay out of it as much as possible and let him run this show. It’s hard because I want this so much for him and for our family.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers and advice.

I pray it goes well for you and your family, may God’s will be done. No matter what, keep your hopes up , thank the Lord and continue praying. It will turn out well!

Update:

DH has an interview scheduled at the end of the month for this job. He was basically guaranteed an interview when he did eventually speak with the supervisor, who thinks very highly of him, but still, it’s very nice to actually have it scheduled and know he’s made it past the first cut. 😛 One possible issue is that there are several people “in house” who have also applied, who understandably would also get a lot of consideration.

Your continued prayers are really appreciated!! I’m hard at work with a 54 day novena, but otherwise still trying to stay hands-off. :o
