Is there any way to self-teach Creighton method? Like a book or something?

I want to learn but my nearest instructor is 45 minutes away and the class fees really add up too.

No.

They do have a distance options, but it is not a “self taught” option. You still meet with an instructor over the phone (or mabye Skype these days, technology is great).

Fees are on a sliding scale, and some insurance companies will pay for the classes if your instructor is an RN. Talk to the instructor, they may have some options for you.

They have a book, but you can only get it through your instructor. Don’t worry too much about the fees. It depends on your instructor. My instructor let us purchase the original kit (book, first few charts, stamps) but offered her instructions for free because she felt this should be freely available knowledge. I ended up making an excel spreadsheet that does most of the work for me. I just hit a bunch of drop down menus and that’s it. It saves me from having to continue to buy the charts. Even if you don’t have advanced excel skills, you can still make a basic chart on excel. That’s a lot easier to send back and forth on emails.

Thank you both for your answers. It’s good to know there may be some flexibility. I hope so because the original price she gave me for classes and materials is going to add up to more than $200, not to mention all the driving I have to do to get back and forth.

I emailed the instructor again to see if there are ways to cut down on the number of sessions. She did mention that because I already use STM that I might not need as many sessions.

My wife and I used a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It doesn’t teach the Creighton Method per se, but combines many of the common methods - Basal Body Temperature, Cervical Mucus and Cervical Position. All the methods are explained in-depth and she discusses how to use them in different combinations. She talks about the rules to follow if you’re trying to get pregnant as well as avoid pregnancy.

This book really suprised me - the author is not Catholic, and everything written is from a secular perspective, and yet she is an outstanding advocate of NFP. She stresses that NFP is not a form of birth control, although it can be used for that. This book addresses major and minor infertility concerns and shows how you can overcome them.

Like I said, this book covers several NFP methods, not Creighton specifically, but my wife and I read it, understoond it, and were able to put it into practice almost immediately. Also, the version with the CD includes some charts that you can print out, so you don’t have to make your own.

God Bless and good luck!

Thank you for this! I was told to learn Creighton specifically because it can help p(name removed by moderator)oint hormonal imbalances and other problems (which apparently you can’t do with symptothermal method). So in other words, it’s not just about fertility, although that is important too. Does author of the book deal with these issues as well?

Toni Weschler’s TCOYF is the Sympto-Thermal method. However, she instructs in Fertility Awareness Method (FAM), not Natural Family Planning (NFP). FAM utilizes barrier contraception during fertile periods. While it is a good book on charting Sympto-Thermal, you indicated you already know STM. I don’t think this book will give you anything new.

No.

Again, if you have been advised to chart Creighton for hormonal issues or to otherwise see a doctor affilitated with the Pope Paul VI Institute or Fertility Care, the TCOYF book is not going to help you at all.

Creighton is a wonderful method the in depth knowlage of detailed mucus charting can be more helpful than bbt temps athough, you can p(name removed by moderator)oint hormonal inbalances using stm. not seeing a temp shift is a hormonal inbalances, or seeing temps to low or to hight etc. I have my training in Creighton and stm. I currently use stm but I don’t need the detail mucus info at this time and need the bbt temps more. I do think its a shame that Creighton makes it hard to buy the book cheeper and self teach, but I understand most people would get confused easy and need a instructor. I also wish they would teach bbt temps when needed. sometimes the instructor can view your charts online and talk on the phone. finding a Creighton doctor is a great idea if you can afford it. the creighton book will explain the method but not much on hormonal inbalances. thats were the instructor comes in cheeper than a doctor but more knowlage then us. you can teach it all to yourself but it takes a lot of research and practice with the method.

Good clarification, thank you.

I wish I could just keep using STM, but my new doctor know Creighton and wants me to learn that. I was hoping she would be able to interpret my STM charts better but she didn’t seem to know much about the temperatures. I hope I will be pleased with Creighton. I’m just a little grumpy about learning it because I already put time, money, and effort into one form of NFP and now I have to do the same for another 🤷

I just started using Creighton in order to track my cycles and learn why I am having menstrual pain. Even with the degree in Bio/Chem I am glad to have the support of an instructor as my cycles are not normal - if they were I probably would not have been starting to chart already. Either way it has been an excellent opportunity to get in touch with what my body is trying to tell me.

Thanks, joanofarc. It’s really nice to have some positive feedback. I’ve always had bad menstrual pain and PMS depression and mood problems, so it will be really nice if the method can shed some light on those things.

Do any of you who use Creighton also take your temperature? I always found that an easier sign to read than mucus, so I’m nervous about letting it go.

Temperature is ONLY a secondary sign, it is not the main sign. cm is the main sign of ALL nfp methods. If you are relying on temps more than mucous, you are doing the method incorrectly.

The creighton book has 4 pages of problems from different symptoms.

Creighton doctors aren’t more money than regular docs. At least not in my area.

I know it’s a secondary sign. I don’t think I’m doing the method incorrectly. I’m just saying that my temp patterns are easier to read than my mucus patterns. Especially since I have chronic allergies and the meds interfere with the mucus signs.

I never said Creighton doctors are more expensive than regular doctors. I’m talking about getting trained by the instructor. The doctor can work with my charts for diagnosis, but she doesn’t actually train me in the method. And doctors accept health insurance but I don’t think Creighton instructors do.

Anyway, I decided to bite the bullet and set up the first appointment with the instructor. I’m remaining open and positive that it will be worth the time and money.

I didn’t quote you when I wrote that. i quoted someone else—the person I was responding to.

I know temps are a secondary signs, but for me they’re extremely helpful. My mucus patterns can be hard to read, especially since I have chronic sinus/allergy problems and the meds interfere with the mucus.

The Creighton doctor I go to isn’t any more expensive than other doctors (and she takes my health insurance so that’s not really a concern for me). My concern was paying for (and traveling to) the instructor and the materials. The doctor can use my charts for diagnosis, but she doesn’t actually train you in the method.

Anyway, I bit the bullet and signed up for my first class. She said we could do some of the classes by Skype. Here’s to hoping it goes well!

did you know you can use bbt temp and Creighton. but you can’t use cervix checks with Creighton. Most CM instructors don’t know hardly anything about bbt temps so you may be on your own for that part of the charting. Creighton very rarely recommends bbt temp charting they think its too confusing. what a shame that Creighton Doctors don’t understand bbt temp charts. yah know mucus only method used to use bbt temps too in the beginning. they threw out there thermometers to help teach nfp in 3rd world countries (who could afford bbt thermometers). they had to teach “mucus only” in the 3rd world countries so they critiqued the mucus data so it was more reliable since they were going without the 2nd sign of fertility bbt temp. thats how the detailed “mucus only method” now called Creighton came from.

I ment to say couldn’t afford the bbt thermometers. obviously there was a divide at the time and several methods were formed over the decades. Creighton vs stm have been at “war” ever since. Creighton is the best for mucus and mucus is the main sign of fertility but bbt temps is also valuable information.

You can certainly add whatever observations you want to the Creighton method, but a)your instructor will remind you every time you admit to it that it isn’t part of their system, and b)there really isn’t any room on their charts for more than their info. I love the TCOYF charts because there is lots of room for notes.

I am not in a position to use bbt right now, where I used to use stm, so learning Creighton in detail is very helpful to me. However, I do think that the only practical way (correct me if I’m wrong!) to know for sure if a woman has ovulated is by the temp shift. If I didn’t ovulate, I have a double or triple peak with never great mucus, and then a very early period. But I have no way to confirm when I really did ovulate.

yes if you get a proper (rules aply) bbt temp shift in phase 3 than it would confirm ovulation. it has helped me with double peak and anovulatory cycles. I have really used both my knowledge from stm and Creigton and glade I learned both even though you can’t use both methods fully at the same time.
