Hello Brothers and Sisters,

My husband had surgery two days ago and doesn’t feel well enough to attend Mass. I do not want to leave him by himself for around 1.5-2 hours (20 min. drive each way to Church - large parish, Mass usually lasting more than an hour).

There’s no one else I can ask to sit with him during the time I’d be gone. Would it be mortally sinful for me to miss Mass under these circumstances? I have no desire at all to leave him home by himself right now.

Thank you,
K.

Ilness and caring for some who is ill are legitimate reasons for staying home. You don’t need any kind of dispensation–it’s strictly a matter of purdential judgment on your part. 🙂

The Church is not an institute which hammers down everything on the faithful, but reflects God’s understanding and thinking that not every single person on the earth can have situations go for them. She understands that the person can be put in situations which can go against him and in this case, legitimate reasons to excuse oneself from the day of obligation are granted by the Church. Such reasons includes physical impediments, ailments, sickness, and other grave things. One must be careful though not to under think ones situation and trully reflect if it was a legitimate reason or not. If not going to Mass is caused by ones desire to go do something less important ( I always stress “priorities”) or by going somewhere else where and deliberately miss Mass, those reasons do not meet the standards and can be a mortal sin. But for you case, it is a fair and justifiable reason to pardon yourself from this week’s Sunday obligation, given that you have indeed reflected upon it and had the intentions to actually go to Mass and not deliberately skip it. Pray to God for you husband’s quick recovery and soon return to Mass!.

Caring for someone else who can’t go is a perfectly acceptable reason. Take care of your husband.

Small pondering from deeply rural Ireland when I am unable for many reason to attend Sunday Mass… we have live internet coverage of Mass from many Irish churches and cathedrals. Do you have that where you live?

Yes, thankfully we have televised Mass via EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network).
Thank you all for your help and kindness!
