First off I want to say that I am not sexually active and do not plan to be until marriage, but I have very irregular menstrual cycles one time I went about 2 years without one cycle. I have tried to keep track of the cycles hoping to get them down by the time I am married (am not currently dating) I am married. My doctor suggested birth control to regulate my cycles but feel that the side effects (like death) are too harsh, but what would I do if in several years time I do not have regular cycles, because I do not want to have to use birth control. Thank you for putting up with a not very smart question! 🙂

go to a Reproductive Endocrinologist to find out why you are so irregular. I’m not giving medical advice here but it really sounds like you’ve got a hormonal imbalance…research PCOS…that is often a cause of long irregular cycles.

I do actually have a hormonal imbalance high testosterone, but there is “only one” treatment option birth control. Some doctors tell me if I do not use birth control I will get cancer, others tell me if I use birth control I will get cancer, and yet others say that while not normal it is safe. So i am completely and utterly confused.

i get so tired of all these doctors just offering the Pill as treatment…there is alot you can do to bring hormones to normal levels. Do you have PCOS? high testosterone can go along with that as well.

Please go and see either a pro life NFP only OB/GYN (rare, I know) or see a Reproductive Endo…they often will get to the root of the problem. There is a risk of cancer when the lining of the uterus builds up but never sheds…when estrogen and progesterone are not in balance…but the Pill won’t fix it…it will just cover up the symptoms.

Please seek a doctor trained in Na-Pro technology, the Pope Paul VI Institute can give you referrals.

Just to provide balance to this discussion…

The Church allows the use of hormonal treatments, that may usually be used as birth control, for the purpose of treating relevant medical conditions. And there are certain conditions where such treatments are worth considering (I don’t want to cross over into giving medical advice, which is neither allowed nor appropriate).

If you have concerns about the treatment options offered by your doctor, you should seek a second and even third opinion. But don’t dismiss the use of “birth control” simply on the incorrect assumption that it is either prohibited by the Church or necessarily the wrong option because of risks/side-effects/etc. All medication carries risks and side-effects and these are weighed against the risks of not treating whatever condition you may have. For example, the Pill (combined oral contraceptive pill) may have an associated increased risk of breast cancer, but has a decreased risk of edometrial and ovarian cancers, so may be appropriate to treat conditions where the uterine lining does not regularly shed adequately. That’s just one example and I’m not suggesting that’s relevant to you.

First of all, congratulations for asking on this thread. This shows strength, courage, AND intelligence to question your doctor and look for answers. I was once told at a big city women’s clinic that I had fibroids and would never have children. 20 years later an OB-GYN said during an exam: “You have never had fibroids!” It’s always good to question.

I kept track of my cycles for many celibate and non-celibate years. I also took my temperatures. I wish all girls would be taught how to do this. I learned so much about ALL of my cycle, not just five or six days of the month. I could anticipate better my PMS symptoms and take better care of myself–my overall health. I could learn when I was most fertile and believe me, each month was different. The combined method of calendar, oral thermometer, and mucus observation can be very effective, and when understood by both a responsible husband and wife, can be more effective than the lousy but much touted Pill. EVEN WITH IRREGULAR CYCLES!!!

But the other problem is what is going on with your health? Find a good doctor, OB-GYN, nurse practitioner or physician assistant who really understands women’s health and natural hormones. A pro-life Catholic or Christian is always ideal, but I never could find one. If you can’t find someone pro-life, ignore the rest of their agenda and just listen to them about natural hormone balancing. There are many other non-Christians out there who reject the Pill pushing.

There is a lot of literature on the progesterone-estrogen balance as well as about estrogen dominance as a result of too much hormones in our food and petrochemicals in our environment. They mention cleaning up the diet, avoiding plastics, polyesters, hormones and chemicals in your food, health and beauty products, detergents, etc. It is controversial but I believe there is some truth to this. It could explain why women have so many gynecological problems and why girls are developing earlier and becoming more aggressive.

The pill is a synthetic hormone. There is much literature out there about how much “better” it is since they have calibrated the right doses, blah, blah, blah. I am skeptical about anything that takes our normal, imperfect cycles and creates an artificial one. I still wonder about the long term effects on women who have taken the pill for years. Why did anyone ever allow this kind of “medicine” ? There could have been so many other ways to help women with good reproductive health AND keep us healthy. But they stopped most research with the dang pill. (OK I have strong opinions here but I still see women with serious problems as well as strokes from using the pill.) I still prefer the term “fertility awareness” as a focus for women instead of “birth CONTROL”. Can you imagine what women’s health (and the world) would be like if all research and practice backed the idea of fertility awareness instead of birth control? I believe that someday we will ALL look back on this artificial folly-the Pill–and wonder what on earth were we doing to our women!!!

Good luck in your search. Many women have been finding better physicians. Keep looking. God bless you.
