What does the Catholic Church teach about praying in tongues.
Or is is still used as a form of prayer?
Is there still a Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group active?

From what I know, the apostles spoke in tongues meaning that their words transcended language barriers in order to evangelize both the Jews and Greek/Latin speaking gentiles. I’m not sure that the Church says anything about the Pentecostal version of speaking in tongues, but personally I don’t believe in it.

Yes, it’s still used. I saw a priest doing it a few months ago. It’s not very common but does happen.

Yes, there’s still a big Charismatic Movement in USA though sometimes they use words like “healing service” or “Holy Spirit” instead of Charismatic.

First people I ever heard praying in tongues was my friends parents holding a prayer group from my Catholic Church back in the 90’s. It sounded so beautiful and I didn’t know what it was till my friend told me. Years later, I got the gift of tongues also when I was with the Pentecostals. Currently looking for group at local Catholic community.

I don’t know what the Catholic Church teaches, but growing up we were taught that those with the gift of tongues should refrain from praying that way publicly in church unless there was also someone present with the gift of interpretation.

Otherwise, the person praying in tongues should do it privately, as a wonderful, mystical way of praying with God.

I don’t think modern Pentecostal churches feel this way, though.

I haven’t heard of any Charismatic Catholic groups near me, but I’d like to learn more about them in the future. There have been testimonies of healing here on CAF from people who’ve gone to a healing service.

But I really don’t know how speaking in tongues is incorporated in their services, if at all. I do believe it is a gift of the Holy Spirit, and if He wishes to grant someone that gift, then I’m sure it is an amazing experience.

Some of the first video shows a meeting Pope John Paul II had with leaders of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Vatican gardens.

Forwrard to 5.38 and you hear them praying in tongues.

The second video shows Pope Francis when he joined more than 50,000 Italian Catholics in the Charismatic Renewal for a rally at Rome’s Olympic Stadium. Pope Francis kneels as they pray for him in tongues .

I would suggest you use the search feature to find threads related to the Charismatic Catholic spirituality here.

The New Testament was written by, for, and about Catholics. Everything it it is Catholic, so that is where the Church writings begin on the Charismatic gifts.

Yes, many of us use this form of prayer

Yes, there are still active prayer groups. You can find one near you.

This is one form of tongues that reverses the separation of the peoples that occurred at the tower of Babel.

There are no authentic gifts of the Holy Spirit in Protestant communities that did not come from the Catholic Church.

Yes, the form of tongues that is meant as a prophetic word for the congregation should be used as St. Paul instructed.

There will sometimes be more time of quiet for private praise. Some priests will linger during the elevation as there is a spontaneous outpouring of adoration.

Ask the HS to show you the gifts He has already given you in Baptism and Confirmation. Learn about the gifts, so you can recognize when they are at work.

The Papal Chaplain, Fr. Cantalemessa is Charismatic.
