I am a covert to the catholic faith so don’t know how I would go about praying for the souls in purgatory or I don’t even know anyone who could be in purgatory so how do I pray for them?

Start with something simple, like “Jesus, have mercy on the souls in purgatory and the souls on earth.”

Say it once a day, or after every time you pray.

Add a Hail Mary for them if you like.

It doesn’t matter if you know anybody in purgatory. With all the ancestors you have, it’s likely somebody from your family tree may be there, plus it’s one of the seven spiritual works of mercy to pray for the living and the dead. The above short prayer covers both the living and the dead.

You can also always offer any prayer - the Mass you attend, your Holy Communion, a Hail Mary, an Our Father, a Rosary, etc. - for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Here is one specific to your needs, but Hail Mary’s, etc…work just fine.

There are no rules. Just pray a short prayer or even a Rosary or Our Father for the souls in Purgatory as your intention.

The principle: A friend gave me a copy of Parochial and Plain Sermons by Saint John Henry Newman. In it, he brilliantly addresses this and many other theological topics. In essence, once re-created in Christ, we are vivified by the Spirit - and that Spirit does not leave us at bodily death or allow what God has created to expire or be unaware.

I recall that Christ was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit so that He could preach the Gospel to the spirits in prison. If we are members of Christ’s Body, the same applies in some manner, to each of us.

Thus, any prayer, remembrance or penance can be applied to the souls undergoing purification. “Our Father…Hail, Mary…Glory be”, a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Rosary, Apostle’s Creed or even impromptu verbal or mental prayer can be applied to those undergoing purgation.

You can even ask Father to have a mass celebrated for them.
