Hmm, sounds a lot like the Catholic teaching. šŸ™‚ šŸ‘
No matter how you slice and dice it, we are not necessarily so far apart.

I tend to forget that myself at times.* I will give them a new heart and put a new spirit within them; I will remove the stony heart from their bodies, and replace it with a natural heart, so that they will live according to my statutes, and observe and carry out my ordinances; thus they shall be my people and I will be their God.**

But as for those whose hearts are devoted to their detestable abominations, I will bring down their conduct upon their heads, says the Lord GOD.*
Ezekial 11:19-21 NAB
*John said to him, ā€œTeacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow usā€. Jesus replied, ā€œDo not prevent him, there is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me.ā€

ā€œFor whoever is not against us is for usā€.
  • ā€œAnyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.ā€
    Mark 9:38-41 NAB

Hello Eucharisted,
Also, is ā€˜second god’ a quote? Because that is a strange phrase for a Christian to be making. But maybe I just don’t know the context it was written in by a Church Father.
It just so happens that the quote you are asking about is from Saint John of Damascus. I do not know if it was translated accurately but he was referring to the deification of man, the Eastern Christian doctrine of salvation, or Theosis.

It happens to be the case that this teaching is well understood and taught in the Eastern Catholic churches, and is generally well covered in their catechisms.

St John of Damascus lived at the turn of the eight century, always in Muslim territory and sometimes at the service of the Caliph. He was a scholar. He vigorously opposed the iconoclasts (who could not get to him where he was), took holy orders and wrote an important treatise called ā€œOn the Orthodox Faithā€, which to this day stands as an accurate explanation of the Orthodox Catholic Christian Faith, a very good read.

St John of Damascus, as you know, is a Doctor of the Church, so declared by Pope Leo XIII.

Pax et Bonum,
Michael

Interesting. Perhaps Tradycja doesn’t know what ā€œEastern Catholicā€ means.
I had thought of that.

In that light I would think my response, the first in the thread, would be helpful.

I did notice that the OP knows enough to understand the concept of EENS, so we are not dealing with a complete novice here. I only hope my words did not cause offense.

Because they don’t have the answers. Either that or they want to expose you to Orthodoxy, and thereby, suck you into it. Or it could be because the Orthodox Church just can’t decide on an answer.

The first poster was asking for - well - Orthodox answers to a specific question; not for RC objections to Orthodoxy, or for the RC answer on the issue asked about. The Orthodox answers may or may not be the RC ones, but that is not the point.

Besides, RCs are always complaining that non-RC sites can’t be trusted to give a fair account of RC teaching on what RCism believes - so why should RC sites be any more reliable when talking about Orthodox belief ? This site is hopeless as a source for Protestant belief - why should it be any better as a source for Orthodox belief ?

Yes, I realize what ā€œEastern Catholicsā€ are. I posted this here because several years ago, when I was following these forums more closely, I knew that there were some Eastern Orthodox members who participated in the ā€œEastern Catholicismā€ section, one screen name was a ā€œFr Ambroseā€, a priest of the OCA, the other was a Russian Orthodox priest from Italy or something.

Someone asked another question…my screen name means ā€œtraditionā€ in Polish. I just chose that name because I am of Polish descent and go to the Traditional Latin Mass.

Most Orthodox were booted off here so you will not find them posting anymore.

Edit. Fr. Ambrose is a ROCOR Priest.

To quote Jerry Seinfeld, ā€œI don’t think you do. If you did, I’d have a car.ā€

Wait. Strike that last part. 😃

But seriously …

You must be thinking of a different forum. The Eastern Catholicism Forum has been in existence for less than 2 years.

BTW, welcome to the forum. šŸ™‚

From my experience on the Non-Catholic Religions Forum (I can’t speak for the whole CAF website), I would say that there are in fact a fair number of Orthodox posters here, but I don’t see them terribly often. But they come ā€œout of the wordworkā€ every once in a while.

Although, when I went looking for that rule…I couldn’t find it. It’s got to be in there somewhere. 🤷

Forum Rules
ENFORCEMENT
3. Judgments by the Moderators can be discussed with the Moderators via private messaging but not on the board itself.
Banned Topics List - Sept. 21, 2008
9. Debating moderator action, including discussing, disputing, or speculating as to why a member’s posting privileges were restricted, why posted messages were edited or deleted, or why threads were closed or removed from public fora.
Reasons Why Members are Suspended or Banned
NOTE: … the reasons behind a suspension or other disciplinary action are rarely obvious to forum members. Public speculation as to the reasons behind a suspension or ban are therefore fruitless (and a primary reason why it is against forum rules).
