Maybe considering the fact that the flesh is contrary to the Spirit will bring a light to the difference in the two. Their is no union between them that is why we will be given a new body one that is not in contrast to the spirit.
THE WAR WITHIN: FLESH vs. SPIRIT
(Galatians 5:16-18)
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law.
The connection is that the way one acts is a product of the way one thinks which itself is a product of what one is! This is true both for those “in the flesh” and those who are “in the Spirit.” This is why Jesus was able to say in Matthew 7:20, “By their fruits ye shall know them.”
This is vitally important because, as verse 6 states, the end result of having a mind of the flesh is death! The end result of a having the mind of the Spirit is life and peace!
Romans 8:6 “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace”.
The law shows us that we are under the control of sin and points us to Christ, the only one who can save us.
Romans 8:3-4 “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit”.
11 And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased. 12 I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!
13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
