My protestant, fundamentalist, and evangelical brothers and sisters in Christ. I have a question for you. Why do some of you deny that catholics are part of the proverbial choir. Then you go on trying to " convert " catholics to " OSAS " christianity. Why preach to the choir, when REAL lost souls are out there? ( athiests, muslims, pagans ) Spend all your evangelization efforts on those who ACTUALLY need to be led to Christ. * scratches head * It seems some people are more interested in " converting " catholics then saving all those other people from real condemnation.
Que sera sera. Please explain someone if you can, why this happens.

Well, here goes… from my perspective. But first of all, I no longer do it because I now have been drawn to the Catholic faith because of the very friend I tried to persuade.
Growing up Protestant in my town, we were made to believe the usual falsehoods of Catholics praying to Mary and worshipping graven images, etc.
I was “saved” in 2004 and the big thing is, of course, being saved by grace, not works. So, I had a passion for wanting to tell my Catholic friends that they can be freed from the guilt and bondage of Catholicism.
I know that there is a lot more to that as I’m learning. I always had questioned in the back of my mind the once saved, always saved concept.

Not to argue with, but I wonder why you all don’t spend more time trying to free the muslims, hindus, mormons, JH,s and athiests from REAL guilt and bondage, not the fake impression you( plural ) seem to have that we catholics suffer it. By the way welcome home to the fullness.

because catholics are pagans…they worship idols, they have made an image of god, they believe their prieses to be God (well not all the time) … they confess to man and not to god…they worship and pray to Mary and the saints … they baptize infants (before the they can understand)… they teach their children to drink alcohol in 2nd grade … and the list goes on and on…

(BTW: I’m a convert from an Evangelical Family and have this fight every time I go home…but they are learning the truth)

My only guess is laziness:) I didn’t know any hindus or muslims, never saw JH’s. I am friends with a few atheists and they are quite content where they are spritually after many debates.
I do live in the South, and a lot of times many Christians like to stay in their own comfort zone, so Catholics I guess are an easy target.

I wish to make a followup statement: I don’t mean to offend.
I will draw a parallel between politics and religion. Liberal-minded activists always seem to be attacking mild american infractions and ignoring or defending other countries more serious actions. Its a combination of guilt and cowardice perhaps. If they really wanted a change, they would fight the REAL enemies of justice.
In the same way, many not catholics attack catholicism. If they REALLY wanted to spread christianity, they should try to " save "as it were, the REAL pagans…I don’t mean that all are cowards. I just think they light the actual darkness, not try to shine a candle in the SON-light

Very well said…you have a good point.
I am very weak right now in my beliefs, so I am not qualified to debate this one very much.:o I’m interested in what others might have to say on this thread.

Not to sidetrack my own thread, but here goes. I finally a few weeks ago went to confession. And I was freed of guilt and bondage to unconfessed sin, that I had carried for years. Not only was I freed from the sin, its guilt, and the consequences, but it was if the sins had never existed in the first place. In my view of catholic reconcilation, sins confessed are not only forgotten, but are made as if they had never happened. They aren’t drowned in the ocean as protestants claim happens at the " sinners conversion towards a personal lord and savior ", they are as it were erased from the universe and the mind of God. But I got off topic. Anyway I get why they target catholics. The question I have is why don’t they so vehemently seek to convert the other groups. Or am I just not seeing it. Any prots or former prots please respond to the second part of it.

Like he said catholics are easy target. beside that has been their mission from the beginning. to steal the CC.
no offense to any one, but this reminds me of the works of the devil always trying to steal what belongs to God.

***Chesterton said, “The Catholic faith even when watered down can still boil the world to rags.” ***

I think I understand now, Some, not all, of those who target Catholics are tools of the devil, and as such, would not target pagans, muslims, etc, because the truth is not there. EUREKA!
As for the rest, I supposed they are either misguided, cowardly, or both.

judge for yourself. he even try to deceive Jesus Himself let it alone His Church.
what about St Peter.
i believe the devil can and does use people to steal what belong to God.
it has been since the begining from the time of Adam and Eve.

You seem very ignorant of the Catholic faith and if I may say, very bias to believe the worst. We don’t worship idols, we use them to help us concentrate during pray. The image of God is used in the same way, to help us remember the suffering he endured for us. The comment on our priests is too silly to reply to, we worship only God, we baptize when we do since its a saving grace that does not need consent and should be administered as soon as possible, we obviously believe in the commandment of our Lord Jesus when told us to “drink his blood” and the list does go on and on…

(BTW… maybe if you were more learned in faith prior to your arguing you wouldn’t fight with your family or any other)

Woops, jvanhoudt. I think dhgray was only demonstrating the fundamentalist mindset. If I understand dhgray correctly, s/he is a Catholic from a fundamentalist family who forever fights those incorrect accusations.

**Suggestion for anyone: Read Karl Keating’s book Catholicism and Fundamentalism. **It is very well-written and thoroughly researched. (Written in the 1980s, I’d love him to release a revised edition for the post-9/11 and Internet world. Fundamentalism has an expanded and scarier definition now, and the web has created new avenues for anti-Catholicism, as well as for sound apologetics.)

Personally, I think we can all learn a good lesson from the example of our misguided brothers and sisters in fundamentalist and Evangelical Christianity. With the exception of some professional anti-Catholics who have been corrected numerous times about what Catholics really believe and persist in teaching fallacies to their followers, most non-Catholic evangelists really have their hearts in the correct places and have quite enviable zeal for Jesus.

It is easy to understand why many fundamentalists target Catholics. In their eyes, we are much closer to the truth than are pagans, Muslims, and atheists, so they have the highest likelihood of success in winning us over. Also, in fundamentalist eyes, Catholics are destined for hell, unless they repent and become good fundamentalists, so they do not see their efforts as in vain. While the Catholic Church sees possible salvation for those outside of Catholicism, fundamentalism teaches a very exclusive soteriology.

Also, don’t forget that many fundamentalists (also Evangelicals, Mormons, and nearly all Jehovah’s Witnesses) are ex-Catholics! They believe they were “saved” from the Catholic Church, and their intentions to bring others into “truth” is very noble, just misplaced. For the everyday fundamentalist or Evangelical in the pews, while confused, they act very charitably within their misunderstandings of Christianity when trying to lure Catholics out of the Catholic Church.

We can all learn from these people. They would make excellent Catholics! We need to be happily evangelical Catholics, busily spreading the Good News and fullness of Truth throughout the world.

(Gee, can you guess that I have a “thing” for Domincan spirituality? hehe) 😉 Veritas!

Catherine, you are correct. However, I do appeciate jvanhoudt’s passion in protecting the faith…keep it up.
I use to preach against the Catholic church until the Lord opened my eyes.

Point taken. This is more of a hobby. I go to other forums as well where the lost are and as anyone on here knows I engage in street evangelism and witnessing door to door.

Yet, somehow, you are not like the dude on the youtube video…

Sometimes, street evangelists get a bad rap, sometimes, however, it is not bad enough.

At least you do something;)

Those who evangelize to Roman Catholics believe that RCs are just as unsaved as pagans, atheists, and moslems, and therefore need to repent as much as these do.
Actually, RCs are in deeper, because they believe themselves to be Christians, but in fact are not.
Please note that I am PRESENTING a view, not claiming it as my own.

Btw, the only Protestant denomination I know of that teaches OSAS is Calvinist Orthodoxy, and I doubt if that is the RC church’s greatest challenge today…

In that case as stated above, I feel sorry for both the misguided souls who preach to the choir, and for the poor souls who are lost when the message is wasted, instead of given to those who need it for salvation.
God Bless us all, Go light the darkness, don’t waste your candle in the Sonlight.
