Question from a Seeking Jew

Hi everyone,
I’ve been reading the post on here for quite some time, and I just decided to register today. I’ve come across the term “cafeteria Catholic” in alot of posts. Can someone please explain to me what this means? Forgive my ignorance, but I don’t know alot about the Catholic faith, I’m just starting to explore it in depth. Thanks.

A “Cafeteria Catholic” is someone who wants God on their terms and not on God’s terms. They are not at the point where they are ready to approach their relationship with God from the position of complete humility, trust and faith. They are not ready to fully surrender to Jesus Christ and his Church.

A Cafeteria Catholic is better then an “all-or-nothing” Catholic.

An all-or-nothing Catholic leaves the Catholic faith because they do not understand or agree with, 100% of the Catholic Church’s teachings.

I found a book several months ago about a fellow who converted from Judaism to Catholism. He explained the roots of Judaism and how it is fullfilled in Catholism. Here is a link to his book.

“Salvation is from the Jews”, by R. Schoeman.

He is a recent Catholic Convert, and wrote a wonderful book showing the Jewish roots of Catholicism. He also has a website, but I don’t have a link , but type in the title of the book in a search engine, and you should find him. Or, you can email me at styree3@cox.net and i will give you his email.

Hi! I just wanted to share with you what a respect I have for this Jewish religion. Judaism is so ingrained in Catholicism, and once I started learning more about the Jewish faith the more I understood the Catholic faith. Interesting, so this brings me to another question: If a person is a “cafeteria Catholic” at the time of his or her death, will that person be in Heaven, or be damned? Please forgive my ignorance.

If I convert to Catholicism (Or any other faith for that matter), then Jews would no longer consider me to be Jewish. That is something I will have to come to terms with if I do convert. Just the fact that one’s a “cafeteria Catholic” doesn’t necessarily mean one will be saved or damned. It depends on, like all of us, whether their soul is in a state of grace or not when they die.

You would be considered a Messianic Jew (or Completed Jew). WOW what a blessing.

You don’t have to be Jewish to have an idea of what I’m going through. My Jewish faith is leaving me hollow. Reading the TANAKH and the Talmud is unfulfilling. Observing the dietary laws leaves me feeling empty, as does attending Shabbat.

Thank you everybody. Now that you all have explained it, the term makes perfect sense. In that respect, there are alot of “cafeteria Jews” too. By the way everyone, I grew up as a nominal Protestant (Me and my parents attended church every now and then and never prayed or read the Bible) and decided to convert to Judaism as an adult, since I was biologically half-Jewish. I haven’t attented temple in a while, though, because something is missing. I’m not sure what, but SOMETHING. I’ve visited alot of different temples, but none of them are fulfilling to me. I’ve been researching church history lately and the Catholic Church keeps coming up again and again. I’m sorry if this sounds rambling, but I’m seeking. My condolences to all Catholics on the death of the Pope, by the way. He was a righteous man.

I would highly recommend an excellent book titled, “Salvation is from the Jews.” I don’t have the author’s name with me at the moment but it is a very good book.
