I think it depends upon the young people involved and the families. I was listening to an Al Kresta podcast and he had a guest who was discussing the “case for marriage”. He was relating the problem of unchastity and other moral evils with the waiting for marriage at a later date when material gains or lifestyles could be achieved. One of the points that was made is that in times past people got married young and their parents continued to help them with whatever goods or finances they had. I don’t have any problem with parents continuing to help out young marrieds if it discerned that the time is right for marriage. If it was one of my kids I would probably still pay for college.

Even if no parental help will come there is still a case for a young marriage.

Hey yall
My girlfriend and I have been dating for two years now (we were best friends throughout most of our lives…so we’ve been together a long time). Now we are both in college and 19 years old. We’ve talked about marriage as something we can see in the future…me more so than her (as in I am definite on this decision where as she is wanting it to happen but is not definite). So my question is…also before that…we go to separate colleges (which hopefully will not be the case next year). So my question is…should i go ahead and pop the question? Is there anything wrong with being engaged for a couple years before getting married? I dont mean it to be a promise ring sort of thing…i want to get married to only this woman, and so why not just go ahead and say it right?
My exboyfriend and I were good friends through highschool, and dated during out one year of community college together. When he transfered to a university, and me to a tech school for my nursing program, the stress had us drift apart. We also became different people… maturing and having different interests. While we attended the community college, we were certain we would marry, and made the plans… short of actually becoming engaged, which i am greatful for.

I definately wouldn’t ask her until you’re ready to actually marry her. I don’t see anything wrong with a promise ring… but to be engaged… i dunno, i think you should wait until you’re at a position where you can support eachother and get married.

A lot of this thread is about marrying young. But in the OPs case, they wouldn’t marry for a bit (at least that is my impression.) They would be getting engaged and then going off to separate places. I don’t think it is quite the same - I’m not sure what would be served by doing that rather than simply continuing their relationship as long as both are keen, and getting engaged closer to when they would actually marry.
