Hello -
Please forgive me for asking a question that may rub some the wrong way, but I just don’t know where else to go for an answer to this. My wife and I recently moved to a new area in November 2015. We are both revert Catholics , but have not officially re-joined the church as far as Adult Confirmation or RCIA goes. Basically, one year ago, we decided that the Catholic Church is where we belong and we have committed to that for us and our children (one 3 year-old, another due on May 6th). We immediately began searching for a parish once we moved here, and for some reason or another, had difficulty making that decision. I was torn between two parishes for different reasons. I had some concerns about some of the things being offered at one parish, and so ultimately opted to attend choice 2. We have been attending choice 2 for several months and it is a nice place. All along I’ve had some doubts that this is actually the better fit for us, but we have enjoyed it and have reached out by attending some of their events. I met with the Adult Formation coordinator about the process of RCIA, baptism, etc, though we haven’t officially initiated any process of any sort.
There are a couple things at play, I guess. One, we have a 3 year old who is extremely hyper and who will not sit through a mass without basically screaming and having a fit. It is just fighting a losing battle to have him in there with us for mass, and it isn’t beneficial for any of us. They occasionally offer a staffed nursery, but is very sporadic, so what we’ve been doing is taking turns every sunday with being with him in the nursery room even though there’s no staff in there. So, we’ve been attending mass separately since the start. It just doesn’t feel right, and it feels disjointed. Choice 1, offers a staffed nursery every week, along with a men’s group and more opportunities to get connected, outreach, etc. I hate to even mention this because I’m totally sounding like a consumer, but we are just trying to find the best fit for us as a family and settle down. We’ve already registered at choice 2, so now I’m feeling like it would be wrong to check out another parish that may be the better fit. I would love to hear people’s thoughts on this? Can I check out another parish once registered at Choice 2? Also, if we discover that this nagging feeling all along about the other place being the better fit is correct, is it okay to start attending there instead and then eventually registering there. We’ve been attending the current church for 3 months, somewhat sporadically and we don’t currently have any commitments there. Are we now committed to the place we have registered, which I feel that we were a bit hasty in doing.
Lastly, I have since met one on one with the priest of choice 1 and he addressed my concerns I had with two of their offerings there. I felt like he addressed my concerns and answered my questions to where I understood better, and I felt like I could lay it down.
Thanks in advance for your comments and advice.
