Do I have to be in the priesthood in order to partake in exorcisms? Could I contact a local exorcist and ask to train and go along? or how does it work. Thx God Bless

The rite of exorcism is* restricted* to an appointed Priest (or a Bishop may do so).

One has to be a priest to do na exorcism. Actually, it is the bishop but is delegated to a priest. To do an exorcism, there has to be the bishop’s permission to do so. There is an intense spiritual battle going on in an exorcism, and one has to be mentally and spiritually prepared.

I’d imagine that in Vegas they would need a pretty good exorcist lol 😛

Wait, if only priests could perform exorcisms, are the Protestant exorcists faked?

Do protestants have a rite of exorcism? And are these the same as those performed in the CC? I am not aware of any protestant exorcisms, if there are, could you provide links?

I do not the best link for the specifics, but it none the less shows that some Protestants do indeed have exorcisms:

I have seen specials on the history channel for the history of exorcisms, and it has mentioned numerous times that Protestants do have exorcists

Priests are the only ones allowed to perform exorcism, largely because they are the only ones with the proper training. Anyone with the power of God on their side however, can cause the demon some serious trouble. It is in fact possible, and there was a (distant) time when a few in the laity performed exorcisms, and I believe that in the Eastern churches exorcism is viewed as something of a charism, which both clergy and laity can partake in, although they are of course rare. The Church does however restrict others from performing exorcisms largely because they are almost never prepared for the spiritual combat required for the ritual. On the other hand, exorcists frequently have very devout laypeople, and sometimes religious, praying along with them as they perform the exorcism. They form a sort of spiritual backup.

Now as for finding your local exorcist, that is going to be very difficult. Exorcists are to remain unknown, so you can’t simply go up to one and ask to apprentice under them, especially if you are not a priest. Those who get the privilege of praying with them are typically recruited by the exorcist himself after careful observation. You can certainly read up on exorcism with books like “Exorcism and the Church Militant” or “The Rite” but don’t go out actively seeking to do it. It’s dangerous for those who are spiritually unprepared, it’s against Church law to do so, and ultimately, if God wishes for you to help a priest with his exorcisms, the job will find you, not the other way around. In the meantime, remember to pray for those afflicted with the terrible suffering of possession.

Here are a couple of links to articles that may be of help.

It is good to remember the seven sons of Sceva. Leave exorcism to the pros.

Acts 19:13-16 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

Are you still in seminary?
Have you watched “The Rite”?

lol it could explain why they never work I guess haha…or perhaps it depends on the severity of the demon
Frankly, possession is quite rare these days, although it still does occur. Much more likely is that many who claim “possession” are actually only in a state of “oppression”, which is distinctly different - and less serious. That state can often be helped with the pious offering of a spiritual warfare prayer.

Generally speaking, what certain Protestants call “exorcisms” would be (from the Catholic perspective) more accurately described as deliverance prayers. In other words, the idea is to pray to Jesus to deliver someone from demonic influence, and any baptized Christian can do this. A Catholic exorcism, of course, essentially does the same thing, but it does so by a bishop or delegated priest invoking the authority Christ granted his Church to cast out demonic spirits.

Actually, we see in scripture that Jesus gives all of us authority over evil principalities and powers. HOWEVER, like a previous poster said, one needs to be spiritually prepared for this sort of thing. Someone who doesnt know what theyre doing can easily make it worse. I’ve heard of demons jumping from the possessed person to the person trying to get the demon out. Thats why you should be very careful before laying hands on someone. Priests should be the ones to perform exorcisms because they know what theyre doing, and they know all the precautions to take. We also see in scripture that Jesus tells his disciples that the sort of demon that was possessing the person “can only come out by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:27-29).

I guess, you can as a prayer warrior, but only upon the invitation of the exorcist priest. But be prepared mentally and spiritually, go to confession prior to joining one. I think those asked to assist are very deep in their spirituality.

I hope you read the book “The Rite”? I hope you do and you will learn alot from it.

It’s possible, but it’s unlikely, and you shouldn’t go looking for it.

John89…it is about exorcism, a true story of an american priest who is sent to rome to train as an exorcist…and learns about the evil, the author too does and change…a movie based on the book is out now, same title. The book contains a lot of info too about different kinds of possessions, and other information.
