OK, so I am in a discussion with someone that does not believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Here is what they have written me:
'The Passover meal, which is the meal Jesus and His disciples were celebrating, was instituted as a memorial meal. The purpose of the meal was to remind the Jews of God’s provision in the past and His promised provisions in the future. In the middle of this memorial meal, Jesus takes the loaf of bread and the wine and changes the meaning of the memorial symbols. It is important to note that Jesus continues to use the words of a memorial when He states “Do this in remembrance of me.”
In God’s inspired, perfect word, we are taught that Jesus only died once.
“Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” Hebrews 9:25-28
If Jesus only died once, He cannot be sacrificed over and over again weekly.
In God’s inspired, perfect word, we are taught if we have to continually sacrifice Christ, we are not saved.
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins” Hebrews 10:1-3
In God’s inspired, perfect word, we are taught that once Christ offered His sacrifice on the cross He sat down at the right hand of God and was finished.
“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. 13Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, 14because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Hebrews 10:10-14
I would encourage you to read Hebrews 9:11-10:18 in its entirety.’
OK, so help me respond to this. I already have given reference to John 6 where Jesus stated numerous times that His flesh was real food & His blood was real drink. That we must eat His flesh & drink His blood because that is what He told us to do. I realize I will probably not change this person’s mind, but would like to defend my faith.
Thanks!
