This is just a quick question for those involved in the Charismatic Renewal. Please don’t turn it into an argument for and against it if possible. 🙂

I have found a Life in the Spirit course that runs from January to March. My question is: I have been baptized (in the Anglican church) as a child, and am hoping to be confirmed in the Catholic church next Easter. Is it okay to do this course before my confirmation, or is it just for those already confirmed?

I went to an Opus Dei retreat before I was Catholic. That being said, I think its not forbidden as long as the group is approved by the diocese, and you remember that as a non-Catholic you may not take part into ANY sacraments while attending it.

I am not sure though whether you should do that. Catholic faith is so beautiful and there is so many pathways to live it, not just the one you think is for you right now. I would take it to God in prayer, in Adoration if possible, and take it from there. Maybe I would also frequent my prayer life: start praying the rosary, start reading Bible daily, it does not have to be more than 15min and it will transform your life, that’s a promise! 👍

Why even convert if you’re looking for the same practices under a different name? It’s still very much like the Anglican side of things that made the traditional Anglicans come home to Rome. Good luck with your decision, though.

I would give a call or visit to the parish Priest, as he will likely be involved in the seminar at some level. If you can go at all, please do. I tell you that my faith life simply exploded after I attended such a seminar. No comparison. I just offered a prayer for you.

From my experience of people involved in CCR and LISS, many do not care whether you were Catholic or not, and may well attempt to “affirm” you in staying Anglican “if that’s how you feel called”.

On the other hand, if you mean the course at Soul Food/Ogle Street/St Charles Borromeo, they are likely to encourage you in the Catholic Faith :). As long as you are open about your status when you sign up that should be fine. I would have thought that someone preparing for confirmation would be most welcome.

Mention it to the priest who is preparing you for confirmation too.

Yes it’s the Soul Food one.

I am very much called to the Catholic church. No one will convince me otherwise, I only mean I was baptized Anglican, I have never been a practicing Anglican.

Hi ASD72, I agree with Raphaela…I might be a bit more liberal (progressive) than Raphaela given her indication that she went to an Opus Dei group…but my sense of your question is don’t worry about it! The Catholic Church is very diverse and very open minded about things, she understands that we are all on a journey and to have questions, to have doubts, to have opinions (as long as they are honestly debated and thought about) and are not used to challenge the church’s teaching you are healthy, its quite all right to make mistakes…so don’t worry if you go to a Life in the Spirit Seminar before confirmation…that is just ridiculous cause you will be instructed by Catholics and my sense is that Life in the Spirit will be talking about (and perhaps making more real)) what we are being confirmed for and how real (and contemporary) the Holy Spirit is in our daily lives…so …catholicsm is an adventure too…be prepared to make many mistakes…it’s fun…

Don’t get hung up by many in our communion who are very strict about what our church teaches and their interpretations of what is a true catholic…as a life long catholic I get tired of the dogmatism and “correctedness of terminology’” using ugly old words like heresy, excommunicaiton, terms which are huge but are humble in meaning…heresy is a difference of opinion withthe teaching of the church…excommunication is a way of indicating that we are not in communion with each other…but it is not condemnation to hell…

Experiement, be bold, seek ye first the kingdom of God…and by what is in your heart, not what Catholics tell you…explore the teachings of the church with respect to your own reality…search in yourself and your conscience to be the Catholic that you are meant to be…but bottom line is if you wanna go to a charismatic Life in the Spriit seminar…GO!

Hey NewsTheMan! Can you get me up to speed on what you meant about the SSPX thing…it doesn’t ring a bell other than the Society of St. Pius or some traditional catholic thing…sorry about that…but I need a bit of background…cheerzq

Thank you for your prayers.

I have spoken to my Priest a while back. I’m still waiting for him to call me so I can start RCIA. I will of course tell him I am attending the course if I do, but I really want to book and do this as part of my confirmation preparation if possible. It does sound like it is okay to attend prior to confirmation so I will book. 🙂

I was just being a bit playful and silly - there are certain threads which bring out the worst in people and a lot of back-and-forth occurs! For information on the SSPX just do a search around this forum 🙂

I don’t feel this an exclusive pathway as such, I just want to welcome the Holy Spirit in my life as much as possible.

I am very much into following the teaching of the Church, but I know that the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is recognized and accepted by the Pope so I am not worried there. I just wondered if you had to be confirmed before attending.

Anyway thanks for the encouragement Bruce. 🙂

Why ask this question in the Traditional Forum where more than likely you will not receive a particularly warm reception since most of us disapprove of the CCR and its novel practices? It appears that you are seeking some sort . of controversy. Why not post in the Liturgy or Apologetics forums? You would probably be better served there.

Hey Mike, I didn’t get that impression at all…I saw it as an honest question…Catholic Answers is a place for Catholics of all pursuasion I would hope…I am not conservative and in fact I’m almost post-modern…I have started groups on Building An Aboriginal Catholicism. and “Birthing an Aboriginal Cosmic Mass”…are you saying that I am not welcome because my views may be in the minortiy?

No, I don’t think there is any controversy here nor in my sights as my work and this thread is and are sincere in their objectives…I look foward to hearing from you more Mike …take care

Mike, my apologies, I did not read that last sentence “Why not post in the Liturgy or Apologetics forums? You would probably be better served there.”…I am relatively new to the Catholic Answers website and you must admit it is somewhat confusing…

Is there an easy way for us to figure out where we can post things…like I can see that in a traditional form you want to focus on Catholicsm from a traditional lens, so it makes sense…but I think the thread in question was posted by mistake in the traditional section as perhpas my groups…

So I am not sure if anyone is looking for a controversy as much as being confused on how to navigate the Catholic Answers site…

Thoughts?

I asked in here because I saw previous threads on it here, and my question has been answered.

I don’t quite know why you have decided to make a judgement on my motivation, I just wanted a simple question answered because they are taking bookings for this course in November and I haven’t heard back from my Priest yet.

I didn t judge. I made an observation. I would say that at least 9 out of 10 posts concerning the CCR that are posted on this particular forum are designed to stir up controversy and convince people that the true traditionalists are actually charismatic members of the CCR,

Since the CCR and Life in the Spirit seminars have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with traditional Catholic spirituality or practices and are in fact pretty much abhorred by most Traditional Catholics it just seemed strange that someone would post here asking about them unless there was an ulterior motive of some sort. Thats all

If I offended you I do apologize

I wouldn t think that the traditional forum would necessarily be the best place for it The avowed purpose of the Traditional Forum is to discuss traditional Roman Catholic spirituality.and practices. While I have no problem personally with what you believe, would have a hard time justifying its inclusion on this particular forum and there is a good chance it would be moved t a more appropriate forum by the mods who do such things fairly regularly:)
