I saw on the early morning tv news this morning (Saturday)
that the Indonesian government was evacuating all the residents of an entire Island chain near Krakatoa because one of the volcanic Islands was about to have a horrific eruption.
I saw the one story this morning, but can’t find anything else about it anywhere today. Did any of you hear the story too??
Do you know of a link???

Thank you, WanderAimlessly !!
The media jumps on a story and then says nothing more about it.

I’ve been watching The History Channel and The Discovery Channel’s documentaries on volcanic activity, and when Krakatoa near Java blew it’s stack in that terrifying eruption I think nearly 200 years ago, the whole mountain and island were destroyed and the “crater” ended up thousands of feet under the water.
Well, Krakatoa volcano is now an above ground mountain and volcanic island once again. It has “rebuilt itself” and come to life, i.e., it is “active,” and poses a threat to Indonesia.

Another active volcano is even more dangerous.
VESUVIUS, which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in
A.D. 79, towers above Naples, Italy. In fact, the “suburban sprawl” of metropolitan Naples has now reached nearly to the base of the active volcanic Mountain, Mount Vesuvius.
I have to ask, WHAT are people thinking by building their HOMES right next to a ticking killer time-bomb???
I think governments should intervene and restrict where people can set up residency so close to active killer volcanoes.
Anyway, I’m rambling, sorry.

God bless,

The last I read, they are having a lot of trouble getting people to evacuate. I can’t find the story any more but they were putting on free concerts to entice people to leave the danger zone. They didn’t want to leave their livestock and don’t believe there will be an eruption soon. Maybe you don’t hear so much about them cause you aren’t near them.

I quite agree about people living on the slopes of live volcanoes - what?!? are they nuts???

Folks get a little casual after they have lived near a volcano for a while.

Consider Mount St. Helens which is just north of Portland Oregon. It’s getting ready to blow yet again.

And it is just one of about 20 volcanoes in the neighborhood.

I guess ya just get used to it.

Or Mount Ranier near Seattle and Tacoma.

And of course, our Mega-Volcano,
the ENTIRETY of Yellowstone National Park
is the top of a gargantuan magma chamber.
Those beautiful geysers, etc, are the result of volcanic activity
churning beneath the ground of the park. The ENTIRETY of
the park is a giant caldera. God help the whole country
if that thing blows.

I would love to see that thing blow, but I would like to see it in an alternate universe where there wasn’t anyone living on the planet.

I know a volunteer “geyser watcher” at Yellowstone who says no one around there who’s got a feel for the geology of Yellowstone thinks the supervolcano is going to do anything anytime soon.
