These questions are mainly for Protestants, I want to try to get a feel for where the different denominations stand in these two questions. I know the positions of a few but not all. Therefore, my questions are:

Is the Bible is the only rule of faith? Meaning that it contains all of the material one needs for theology and that this material is sufficiently clear that one does not need apostolic tradition or the Church’s magisterium (teaching authority) to help one understand it.

Is the whole of Christian truth is found within the Bible’s pages? Is anything extraneous to the Bible simply non-authoritative, unnecessary, or wrong—and may well hinder one in coming to God.

yes! the bible is its own dictionary, and its own translator. The bible is where we go to find the word of God. The word of God is only found in the bible. Everything else is considered the word of Man is it not? Sense the word of God is only in the bible, it must be safe to assume that everything that is not the bible, is not the word of God.

The words of God are for salvation and eternal
The words of man cannot do that.

If you seek spiritual salvation, then only by reading the bible will you find the word of God. You can read anything you like, just don’t trust it as authority or as something more than of this world. Unless what you are reading is a bible tract, or something quoting from the word of God, it is an untrustworthy source and will get you killed[spiritual death is being under the wrath of God] if you trust in it.

In order to study the bible and bible alone, you must follow the rules of the bible that the bible puts forth. Everything you need is contained in the bible. The following are verses which teach us how to study and understand the bible:

Is 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.

** the doubling of something means that God has established it. It is impossible for the natural man to fathom, yet God has doubled this and has established it and we know it is truth because we compared scripture to scripture.

Genesis 41:32 (New King James Version)
32 And the dream was **repeated **to Pharaoh **twice **because the thing is **established **by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 (New King James Version)
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.[the natural man will never understand that the bible is its own source book of truth, the natural man will follow his own idea of salvation]

Matt 13:34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them,

Matt 13:35 that is might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

Ps 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable.

Mark 5:33 And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.

Mark 5:34 But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.

Finally, Christ spoke in parables, always. Christ is completely identified with the bible, John 1:14 “the word became flesh and dwelt among us” So the bible is the word of God also and is also a parable, completely. everything is a picture pointing to Christ. that is what a parable is, an earthly story with a spiritual meaning.

By comparing scripture to scripture, we were able to pull this information and notice that it is established by God. This is Gods guarantee that all we need is His word.

Ps 119:99-104 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word. I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get
understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

2 Tim 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

WOW - no insights at all? 🤷
This probably would have been better asked in the non-Catholic religions forum. May have gotten more feed back there.

Here is a very interesting article written by a Protestant that a Lutheran on this forum shared with me. It compares and contrasts the Reformation views on the Bible (Sola Scriptura) with what Protestants have turned the Bible into today (Solo Scriptura):

Therefore, you are saying that the whole of Christian truth is found within the Bible’s pages and that there is nothing else. That everything else is irrelevant to the Bible and Christianity, that it simply non-authoritative, unnecessary, and wrong. It will hinder one in coming to God. Thanks for you response.

Thanks this is interesting. From my initial read, it seems that even some Protestants see an issue with sola scriptura. Is this a correct assessment?

No I am not saying that. I love history, it is my favorite subject, nothing takes away from that. However there is a line that must be realized, if we are talking about eternal spiritual salvation, then if you put your trust in anything outside the word of God, will put you under Gods wrath. It is not right for us to think that our history is somehow more glorious or important than anything done by Christ, it just simply is not the case. So though I love history, and the history of church is indeed incredible and I have love for the men of God who spread His word, however the line is that “ALL” the glory and praise must be given to God, because it was not these men that did anything of importance and it wasn’t their sacrifice that is of importance, it is all Gods glory and Gods sacrifice because if you want to live and abide “after” this earth and all of her works are burned up in fervent heat, then you need to only be putting your faith, hope and trust in the words of God, and anything that is used to supplement the words you read in the bible must be exercised with caution and trusted only if you can safely say that it is a sound biblical teaching. Meaning it is spiritual, it is in harmony with the rest of the bible, and it follows the general message of the bible.

Speaking as a Catholic I would say that the Protestants who adhere to the Reformation doctrine of Sola Scriptura are okay with Sola Scriptura properly defined. By properly defined for them I mean by how the doctrine was believed during the Reformation. The problem for them comes when the believer takes a solo scriptura stance, which the article argues, is a modern creation and not something that the Reformers would have believed.

I am not certain how big this split within Protestantism is over sola and solo scriptura and how it plays out. That would be an interesting topic for discussion though.

**If a person, even if they believe it is coming from God, receives a teaching that contradicts the written Word of God, that teaching is to be disregarded. **

(Galatians 1:7-9) “Not that there can be more than one Good News; it is merely that some troublemakers among you want to change the Good News of Christ; and let me warn you that if anyone preaches a version of the Good News different from the one we have already preached to you, whether it by ourselves or an angel from heaven, he is to be condemned. I am only repeating what we told you before; if anyone preaches a version of the Good News different from the one you have already heard, he is to be condemned.”

Thanks for your insight on this

It is certianly insight, yet has nothing to do with the question. I would like to add actually, that a lot of people will throw those verses around, the ones saying be carefull about interpretation. Well if you notice, those verse speak about a different Gospel, ie one that is not written in the bible. Now if a person only uses the bible, and compares scripture to scripture, then it is possible it may be a sound teaching. However for people to instantly deny a teaching and their excuse is your verse, then that is going in rebellion against God when new valid teaching is concerened. Why? because you are “NOT” being receptive to the word of God. You are not hearing the truth from the word of God and recognizing it as truth, instead you will scorn the word of God and chastice the person with a better understanding. Well guess where the axe is going to fall, the guy who can open his heart and studies inside the word of God, or the person who doesn’t even listen because their pride is so great, and then dismisses a new teaching by faithfully using scripture to deny scripture.

I would not be throwing those verses around left and right like so many do. And if you are using it, make sure the teaching you use it on is false. However if the teaching is sound, and accurate, and follows the rules in the bible to interpret the bible, then it is in your interest to open your eyes and take a second look at information being presented straight from the bible. it is the only way to verify a teaching.

Though so many of you are so incredibly sure that you are faithful to God, the bible, church and are going to heaven, yet I would say, hold on a min, you just used scripture to deny scripture, and you didn’t even consider the material. And so if you deny Christ that is the word, who is completely associated with the bible, then Christ will deny you on the last day won’t He, Depart from me ye of iniquity, I never knew you. Well that is a scary thought, So i would suggest being a little wiser in your discernment.

wmscott asked:
Is the Bible the Only rule of faith?
Is the whole of Christian truth found within the Bible’s pages?
Is anything extraneous to the Bible simply non-authoritative, unnecessary, or wrong?
No to all three.

Is the Bible truly the “Word of God”, exactly as God wanted it presented, We are aware from the various codices and fragments of NT writings that there are many variations in the texts. We know that later scribes edited the texts, adding words, leaving out words, changing passages, moving them around, etc. So humans edited God’s word, and decided what was to be included in the NT, putting into question some of the things that are in the Bible.

Are the books of the NT the only writings from that time that reveal the teachings of God through Jesus? We know there are other gospels and writings that were used by the early Christian Church, some of which were accepted as Scripture for a time. Many of them have verses identical to those in the Four Gospels that we accept as “Gospel”. How do we know which was the most accurate or whether something contained in these other writings is not also the Word of God?

So there could be “truths” contained in other writings that are not in the NT we use. Plus, scripture itself tells us that Jesus said and did more that isn’t recorded in the Gospels. Like what? Perhaps some of the things recorded in other books? So the answer to the question about whether the NT should be considered the sole “authority” is no.

Why should revelation have ended with the writing of the last Gospel, or the death of the first Apostles? Revelation was occurring before the birth of Jesus so why can’t it be an ongoing process right up to this moment?

But is this revelation dependent on or limited to one person or one body (i.e., the Magisterium of the Catholic Church)? Just as Jesus showed us over and over again, it is in the hearts and souls of the lowest, the poorest, the least educated, and the simplest, that we can find the greatest faith, and through whom truths may be revealed. It did not just come from the Scribes or the Scholars.

The core of what Jesus expects of us, the way to God that He showed us, IS in the Gospels, and perhaps in other places as well, but you will have to do some searching, and some sifting and winnowing to get to it. It can also be found in the faith filled words and lives of those who lived according to His teaching, and their example can help us find His truth, to understand His word, and can act as our guides in our journey to God.

So, the Bible is not the only rule of faith, the whole of Christian truth extends beyond the Bible, and there is much revealed to us outside of the books of the Bible. My answers will please neither Catholics nor most Protestants. But to assume that God’s revelation is limited to certain texts or to the authority of certain people is to approach Jesus with our eyes covered, our ears blocked, and our mind closed to much of His truth.

You might have better luck if you posted your question on a Protestant forum. I know there are Protestants that hang around here but they have probably had these questions put to them so often that they are reluctant to do so again.

I wonder have you ever had Jesus/Holy Spirit tell you to open the Bible to certain verses and then proceed to explain the Word to you? I am here to tell you that is the way one comes to understand what Jesus wants us to know.

Jesus gave us his Holy Spirit to teach and guide us, and he said his people would hear his voice and only follow him. The only way man can come to know God is to have God teach him.

All true Baptists would answer yes to all three quesitons. The official Southern Baptist position is found in Article I of the Baptist Faith & Message, which says:
The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.

When Protestant disagree on the subject of salvation… For example, some Churches believe you must speak in tongues, others believe (Calvinists) that you predestined to either heaven or hell, some believe in eternal security other believe that you could lose your salvation… and on and on and on…

Which one of the above is going to fall under 2 tim (the verse you listed above)? Who is NOT sound doctrine? Who determines who is not sound doctrine?

Who determines if something contradicts the written Word of God? For example, in Protestant circles we have tons of way to be saved. For example, some say you must speak in tongues, others say (Calvinists) believe you are predestined, some believe in eternal security, etc. So, who or what authority determines what doctrine is correct?

Also, where in the Bible does it say that everything in our Christian faith must be in the Bible?

Cya!

To determine which one is the true gospel and which is a different gospel. There are certain rules to follow and you must let the bible speak for itself. by interpreting scripture to scripture, spiritual things to spiritual things, precept to precept, also the word is written as a parable.

Speaking in tongues is the work of the devil. You can find this proof in the bible. I will briefly tell you. Speaking in tongues was a means by which God spoke and the holy spirit moved the prophet to speak. This is one of the means by which God used to speak to prophets. This was entirely the work of God. So now in 95AD, John is on the island of Patmos, and finishes the Book of Revelation and the line which says anyone who adds or takes away from the prophecy of this book. First it is important to realize, “this book” is a reference to “the whole word of God” God uses prophets to speak His word, and anybody claiming they spoke to God by prophecy is a liar because God clearly finished His word in the Book of Revelation. This was 95 Ad. At that time, God finished the prophecies, there were no more miracles. From now on, the only miracle to be performed is the miracle of salvation, which is entirely Gods work.

Now in the bible there are many proofs which speak about the devil having the authority to deceive the very elect, to perform tricks and sorcery, to knock people backwards when the televangelist compels the power of Christ in the person on the stage, this is Satan pushing the person back, not God, Satan has this power. God is no longer working miracles in this manner, the only miracle God does, is the miracle of salvation. Speaking in tongues is strictly the work of the Devil, it is an act of the Devil as the Devil was given authority over all the earth, as well as the saints. This is clearly spoken of in the bible. The Devil comes as an angel of light with his ministers of righteousness, with the ability to deceive the very elect even for the Lords namesake. Those people in charismatic churches are being deceived. They believe they are speaking to God, however they are not, and the Holy spirit is not present in that church.

so that is the first issue, NO, charismatic churches are incredibly evil, and you should pray for those trapped in them. Speaking in tongues is an act of the devil, and is absolutely not from God, it is impossible. the verse in Revelations guarantees us that God is no longer communicating with individual people by prophecy, only through His word the bible.

The issue of predestination is true, it is written about in the bible. No matter what you think it means or doesn’t mean, does not change the fact that it is a fact. Here is the proof:

John 17:24 “Father, I desire that **they also whom You gave Me **may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

Romn 9:11 For the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God **according to election **might stand, not of works but of Him who calls.

Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,

Eph 1:5 **having predestined us **to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will

I am not sure what the official church teaching is, however I am not swayed by any authority but the word of God, and the bible teaches us that predestination is real, and that we are elected of God. To conclude with your last example, predestination, implies that all of our sins are paid for. Do you think any sin you do is more mighty than what the blood of the Lamb could wash away. And the blood of Christ washes all of our sins, the ones we committed in the past all the way to the ones we commit in the future. God knows the beginning from the end, and also wiped all those sins away. That is love. And so you see, by comparing scripture to scripture, we can discern what is truth and what is different gospel by letting the bible tell us. As long as the teaching is a sound biblical teaching using only the word of God as a means to teach, and compares scripture to scripture and the teaching is in harmony with the rest of the bible, it doesn’t make sense to disregard it. You can test what ever teaching you are being taught by harmonizing it with the rest of the bible. and comparing scripture to scripture.

God bless
