Absolutely not! The Qur’an is filled with verses telling Muslims to think and question things around them
O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. 5:101

So i guess the general argument you are presenting is limited by this verse.

Why dont Amy tell this to the many muslim men who beat and kill their wives because the “book” says its ok or society ignores it!

here

and here
It is a matter of discipline. If some one becomes arrogant, abusive it becomes necessary to take action. Three stage action is very wisely advised in the Quran. But the christians cannot undersatnd the goodness in that advice. The last step in such cases could be divorce. But the christians do not like the divorce too. So what they do, I do not know what they do in such bad spoiled wife cases?

If bible does not say in such cases “beat your wife” or it does “say beat your wife”, i have no idea. I believe there is no guidance in the bible about it. That is another bad thing, not having a word of guidance about it.

The Quran is very clear about these things. I can quote a Hadith too, a saying of the prophet 'The best amongst you is the one who is best for his family (towards his family)."

That shows one has to be kind and well behaving husband. Only in serious bad cases where the wife becomes disobedient, something has to be done. What happens when a christian comes home drunk and there is a clash. It is always reported in the newspapers.

no we cannot see the goodness in beating women, even lightly and we cannot believe these are the words of God but of a man.

What has recently happened to you, dear planten? Which supporter of Hadiths cast a spell on you? Last time you rebuked people for supporting their arguments with Hadiths and said that the Koran was enough.

What made you change your mind? Why are you abrogating your remarks?

Is using a tu quoque your answer? People read the Bible all the time and come up with their own conclusions, that’s why we have so many denominations, but that’s not the point is it? The point is “forbidding” anyone from studying the texts as you’ve stated. Sounds like they’ve got something to hide.

I have to look up words like “tu quoque.” What I did was use an analogy in order that you might see things clearly. As Jesus said, pull the plank out of your own eye…

Now, people do interpret the Bible and create all kinds of denominations. But don’t you think that they are WRONG? I mean, what do they base their conclusions on? Catholcis don’t do that, which was my point.

And Muslims are not “forbidden” as you said from studying the texts. In fact they’re encouraged (even commanded perhaps) to study them. To read, and to learn, and the scholar is loved and respected in Islam. What is forbidden is creating a new interpretation WITHOUT STUDYING THE TEXTS FIRST. Sorry for the caps, I just wanted to make a point.

🙂

Eh? Are you allowed to interpret the Bible and Sacred Traditions or do you have to go to school to do that? Are you allowed to say what is a sin or not according to the Catholic Church, or is that reserved for priests and such?

Is your religion one for people who don’t think, then?
It’s not just a question of being free to think or not, it’s whether your stand matches that of the Church! That’s rather different!
I believe there is no problem if our interpretation happens to match that of the Magisterium of the Church (in the Catholic Church, that is! I can’t tell you what the rule would be in Protestant Churches). Where it would differ from it in a way that doesn’t match a teaching of the Magisterium or teaches a thing that the Church doesn’t, then, whether you are a layman or a scholar, you put yourself in a very serious position and you then can’t say you are taking the Catholic position. You still are thinking, but you are not in communion with the Catholic Church.

I guess this 3-step approach is also used in the Gospel, only it’s not involving any corporal punishment. It’s about brotherly correction in Matthew 18. If your neighbour does something wrong, reprimand him privately. If he does not listen to you, go to him with one or two witnesses. If then he still doesn’t listen to you, go and tell the Church. If he doesn’t listen to the Church, then consider him as you would a stranger or a tax collector (publican)

Must such new interpretation, after having studying carefully the text, not come out from an existing interpretation like in the case of a problem that hadn’t existed before, or use an analogy with some existing case for which an interpretation had been found, so that these would be by intern logic related, if I may say so?

Tu quoque is a “you too” reply. I’m not saying that Christians have not done bad things, but when we do them, we are going against the teachings of Jesus and the Church. Can Muslims say the same?

Of course they’re wrong! I’ve heard of translations of the Quran made for western markets where the harsh statements are given a milder interpretation to make it more palatable for gullible westerners.

You made that statement about it’s being forbidden.

No woman should be forced to submit to the indignity of having to dress this way as well! Women are supposed to be the “fair sex” and are treated in this horrible way.

These two women were shot by the Taliban because of alleged charges of prostitution. And Islam believes in perpetuating these horrors until the end of time!

See .

That’s the Taliban. A terrorist group that is not representative of Islam as a whole. Would somebody knowledgable on the subject care to field my last questions?

Furthermore, this isn’t whether anybody thinks what the Koran says is right or wrong, this is what is the significance? We have been told that it was a was a way for answering a practice according to this new religion. Let us accept that answer. We are not in the religion, we are not in the culture, what we think isn’t going to change anything.

Furthermore, to the one poster who thought it was sad that the Bible had no such discription in the case of a husband and wife, there is a verse that says, “Wives obey your husbands and husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church,” which tells how a husband and wife should be towards each other. Not looking for an arguement or comparison; I’m including this so that you may have this knowledge. I hope that you will still participate in this thread and answer any and all legitimate questions proposed.

This is a matter being discussed by a religion.
Would you please go by some religion. Bring your proof from your religion that wife beating is forbidden or it is not good. If you have no such instruction then you can invent anything you like. That will be your personal idea. Nothing from jesus. Please bring something from Jesus. Thanks.

1 Peter 3:7
You husbands, likewise dwelling with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the female as to the weaker vessel and as to the co-heirs of the grace of life: that your prayers be not hindered.

Also, to the Muslims here, and to the prior Muslims, are/were you Suni or Shia…or neither?
My flesh is Suni Wahhabi (so far 😊).
Is there a non-denom/hippy/all loving/as I want it version of Islam
Yes there are some non-denom Muslims (mostly non-Arabic speakers), but they are minority, since Sunis represent more than 85% of Muslims, leaving the other 15% to the Shias and the other denominations (Alahmadiea, Quranics, etc) and the non-denominations groups, (A).

However for the loving part, you wouldn’t find such, because simply all those denominations have to use Quran as their main source, which has no loving verses for the other religions:
(Quran 47:4), (Quran 09:5), (Quran 09:29), (Quran 03:151).

In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself .Ephesians 5:28
