Hi there,
I am baptised and confirmed Lutheran, but since I was a small child, I’ve always felt a mysterious “pull” toward the Catholic Church. I have never gotten the courage to “take the plunge” until now. I do have a few questions, and I was hoping that someone on here could lead me in the right direction, before I bother a priest about it (and also maybe so I will know how to approach a priest with my issues).
I am divorced and have one child with my ex-husband. I wish to start annulment proceedings from him, before I start the RCIA process. He was abusive, and our marriage was defective on a couple levels (which I won’t go into here), so I shouldn’t have much of a problem getting annulled eventually.
I have a fiance who is also divorced. We have been living together for quite a while, and have one baby together.
My fiance is a lapsed Catholic, but with the birth of his child, has wanted to go back to his faith. He also wants to obtain an annulment.
We are planning on joining a church and having our baby baptised Catholic.
I hear that this may take a while, though, and I wanted him baptised asap! It’s very important to me to have him baptised soon.
I have been attending a Lutheran church off and on for a while, but because of my lifestyle (aka “living in sin”) I have felt guilty to go. But they said they will baptise my baby regardless.
My first question is about baptism: If we get our child baptised in the Lutheran church before we fully join the Catholic church, will our baby be considered Catholic? Or will he have to do something special to be recognised as a Catholic when we start attending?
My next question is about marriage. My fiance and I are planning on getting married by the Lutheran pastor early next year. If I start RCIA this fall, will it be a conflict if I’m planning a wedding concurrently by a Lutheran pastor? Or should a priest marry us?
Problem is, our annulments probably won’t be processed by then. Since we haven’t even started them yet, but already have been planning the wedding! And I know a priest won’t marry us if we aren’t free to do so by Catholic standards.
We only this week started talking about me converting, and he going back to the Catholic faith, and our baby being baptised Catholic. That’s why had already started with the wedding plans and such.
Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
