Okay I have two questions about my wedding? and did not know where to post this so I decided on here.

First: is it okay to have a non-catholic friend to do one of the readings?

But the second is a bit more complex.

My dad (who technically is my uncle but he has been my dad since I was 2, adopted me and everything) is a priest. And I am really torn about either having him as my dad on the day, doing dad like things and worrying and basically being moth father and mother of the bride.Or we have him marry us which I guess is more symbolic and stuff but he would be on priestly duties before the wedding and stuff and wont be there while I’m getting ready and things.

He has said he doesn’t mind and I know who we would ask if we decided that he would just be dad on the day. Future-husband-man doesn’t mind. (either way he is getting a priest for a FIL 😉 )

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Typically, no. This is a question for your priest. Only he can tell you what is allowed/not allowed in his parish.

This is totally up to you. Have you thought of doing the Catholic processional the way it is intended in the rubrics? That is, Bride and Groom enter together in the processional.

Obviously he won’t be helping you “get ready” that would be other women helping you get dressed up and ready!
Thank you Monicad. He (my dad) has said he doesn’t mind what he ‘is’ on the day be it priest or just my dad.
Before the wedding he would be at the church when all the guest get there and such things obviously he wont be helping me get dressed but with no mam or anyone like that part of me thinks it would be nice for both of us for him to be there when I’m doing finishing touches and things and for last words of fatherly advice and things which I wouldn’t get if he is being priest.
But then I think him marrying us would be lovely and mean so much.

The choice is yours. I think that, years from now, the fact that your dad actually joined you and your fiance together, will mean the most, but maybe not. No one can decide this for you.

The rule is
DIRECTORY FOR THE APPLICATION OF PRINCIPLES AND NORMS ON ECUMENISM # 133. The reading of Scripture during a Eucharistic celebration in the Catholic Church is to be done by members of that Church. On exceptional occasions and for a just cause, the Bishop of the diocese may permit a member of another Church or ecclesial Community to take on the task of reader.
In most dioceses I’ve been in the Bishop seems to leave it up to the Pastor and I’ve attended many weddings and funerals where one of the readings was done by a non-Catholic. So, ask your pastor or your dad.

Her dad would not be ‘joining her and her fiancé together’, she and her fiancé would be doing that to each other by their exchange of consent. Fr. Dad would simply be there to witness that.

Of course, we know that the priest is the official witness, but he is the one that the bridal couple depend on to make their union official in the eyes of the world.

If it were my wedding, I would have Dad officiate and walk down the aisle with my husband. And yes, I’m sure you can have anyone you choose do the readings. At my brother’s funeral, his widow’s father did one of the readings and he is not Catholic.

Whatever you decide will be beautiful and meaningful. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Either get together the day before, for a luncheon or dinner with your dad, or if you really have everything together, how about breakfast the day of the wedding, just you and him? If he has any further fatherly things to say to you, he can share them then, and then officiate as Father Dad at the wedding.

What a lovely problem to have!! I can’t think of very many women who are going to have your situation. I realize you don’t have a mother but what a special “Father/Father” you do have!

Congratulations and may God bless you in your marriage!
