Hi everyone, for those who can help me I have a few questions. Unfortunately my wife had a miscarriage three weeks ago and we were wondering about the efficacy of NFP prior to her first period. We were told by doctors to wait three months before trying to conceive again so we’re being extra careful about it. Her hCG levels have come down a lot but are still at 301. Does this mean she has not yet ovulated? If not, can we rely on signs from cervical fluid or can the hormones still present from the pregnancy make these signs inaccurate? We typically rely somewhat on OPK tests for ovulation, but those results are skewed because of the leftover hormones (it’s given us four consecutive positives, presumably false ones).

At worst we’ll continue to abstain until her cycle becomes more predictable, but I just thought I’d ask anyway… this whole NFP thing is still somewhat new to both of us.:o

Different methods have different rules. If you are under medical direction to not concieve then use the most conservative rules.
We concieved our 6th 2 months after a miscarriage but we medically needed to concieve quickly.

Thanks for the response. We typically rely on the Creighton model but our concern is whether or not cervical fluid is a reliable indicator after a miscarriage. Her hCG levels are still at 301 so I wonder if that effects bodily signs.

My Creighton manual instructs that a woman begin charting once bleeding decreases and avoid genital contact for four weeks of charting. They also say to schedule a follow-up with your Creighton Model instructor after two weeks of charting.

Follow-up with an instructor would probably be helpful during this transition.

Anecdotally, I know of two cases of conception following VERY quickly after miscarriage.

Thanks LittleWay, that’s helpful.

Does it explain why the Creighton model requires one month of abstinence? Is it because the cervical fluid a poor indicator shortly after a miscarriage?

Does anyone know if the sympto-thermal method has similar instructions?

This is totally anecdotal but I had no problem using the sympto-thermal method after my miscarriages. We did abstain quite a bit more than normal but didn’t have to be totally abstinant. Of course, the hardest time was before ovulation. After ovulation was confirmed with temps, it was much easier.

^^ Do you remember how early you started charting? My wife’s been taking her temperature just recently and she’s in the mid-low 98 degrees… if the thermal shift has already happened how would we know?

I hadn’t actually stopped temping with a few of my losses. And with one or two, I picked it back up as soon as I knew I was miscarrying.
