But was there a difference between John’s baptism and the apostles baptizing ? Was John’s baptism for regeneration ? Was if for receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit?
Yes there was a difference. John’s Baptism was a Baptism of repentance. It was not a a regenerative Baptism for receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
John the Baptist preached a baptism of repentance. No one received the Holy Spirit. However, when we compare the parallel passage in St. Matthew’s gospel (3:16), you find that when Jesus was baptized, “the heavens were opened” and the Spirit descended upon him. This is the change. This is where Jesus demonstrably showed us the way the heavens would be opened to us so that the Holy Spirit would descend upon us… through baptism.
Just to add a little more info to show the difference…
Matthew 3:14
14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
John the Baptist tells us right here that his baptism of repentance does not even come close to the necessity of being Baptized by Jesus to receive the holy Spirit. Jesus came to John to be Baptized in water, and John says no I need you to do this to me. They were already in the water, John could not have meant any other kind of Baptism.
Can you show me in the OT where water baptism made one born of God ?
No you won’t find it and no one here is making that claim.
Apparently Nicodemus was to have known this “water” and new birth, second birth/born again…
I’m not sure why you are coming to this conclusion?
Is it because Jesus says?
10 Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this?
I do not believe Jesus is saying Nicodemus you should have found and understood what I am saying about being “born anew” from the OT.
11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony.
In verse 11 Jesus is referring to the two fold witness of Himself and John the Baptist. See (john 1:7, 19, 23 & 3:28)
This is what Jesus is talking about when He says you do not understand. He is saying you do not understand (believe) who I REALLY AM. Not you do not understand this teaching. John 3 is about not being able to fully believe in Jesus until one is born again in Baptism.
Keep reading Jesus confirms it in the next verse…
12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
The earthly things is the twofold witness Jesus speaks of in verse 11. The heavenly things is this new teaching about being Born anew, in Baptism, in John 3.
Nicodemus was to have known and believed that Jesus was the Messiah not that we need to be born anew.
I can go into more detail on how Jesus is speaking about “belief” here if you like.
Hope this helps.
God Bless
