Shadowcry:
personal experience
Are you referring to a 20th-21st century Inquisition? I’d like to learn more about what you lived through as I am not familiar with Inquisitions of recent history myself. Do you have any links that could give me a better background?

No not really our family was persecuted by the portugese during the 1600s. Its still personal though.

Shadowcry, you came here making vague statements about the Inquisition and the crusades and now you make vague statements about things that happened to your family four hundred years ago and you haven’t answered any of my questions. I must be blunt now.

Put up or shut up - provide some sources for your comments or go away and spread discontent elsewhere.

Why do I need to provide sources I m not talking to you about what happened to my family. I told you I believe the Inquisition is bad because I believe no one should be discriminated on the issue of religion.I have answered your question the best that I could.

Now what is your opinion yinekka on the crusades?

Shadowcry on 10 February you posted I still believe the inquisition were horrible and that there is no use denying it.

I asked you to expand on what you meant by horrible and to name some books or articles which helped you to come to this conclusion. To date you still haven’t replied to my request.

Fair enough if you don’t wish to talk about what you allege happened to your family four hundred years ago; you brought this up not me.

I have never heard of a Goan inquisition, would you like to refer me to some books or articles about it?

…what is your opinion yinekka on the crusades?

When you expand on comments you made I will speak as to my understanding of the crusades.

…and yet we must. Discrimination is often tossed about as a vile thing to be avoided but in reality we MUST discriminate in order ot be civilized. For instance, we (US society) discriminate against people who prefer sex with children even if it’s consensual. We discriminate against those who believe that the earth belongs to all and no one can restrict access to any lands. We discriminate against cannibals and those who believe in human sacrifice. We discriminate against the use of most drugs as a part of religious practice and religious prostitution. All of these things have been seen as valid religious practices by various peoples during history. I find it absolutley necessary to discriminate against religious beliefs that endanger my family. Now how I choose to express my discrimination should certainly be restricted for the good of society but we can’t eliminate religious discrimination nor do I think we should.

I believe that there IS absolute right and wrong. I oppose situational ethics. Thus I CAN’T accept some religions, and some extremists can’t even be tolerated much less accepted. At some point you have to stand for something or you will have nothing.

When I said horrible I meant that they were detrimental to all of those involved. The Church by going against themselves by supporting hate and discrimination.

i have read sevearl books though they were generally vague about the issue describing mostly numbers and events not delving deep into the issue really.

I have read some articles on the internet and have begun to think critically about them cant remember there actual names though because I haven’t researched the crusades for a very long time.

Rather I have spoken to several people on their opinions and they have influenced mine.

Sorry I I sounded rude in the last post, I was irked at your other comment.

The Goan Inquisiton was part of the portugese inquisition were they persecuted Hindus in Goa. I do not want to give links because if find many of the sites are too biased. Though I’m sure you could Google it if you wanted more information

Shadowcry, an inquisition is a legal trial. In most countries in Europe the Inquisitional system still operates. In English speaking countries the adversarial system operates.

Inquisitions were started by the Church to investigate those Catholics accused of heresy. Non Catholics did not come under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition.

You speak of the Portuguese Inquisition, did the Church authorise this Inquisition or the Portuguese government? If it was the Church when and under what pope?

You said that the Church supported hate and discrimination, can you give me an example of that?

If you are interested read the books I mentioned, they are not vague and they cite primary references not just looney tune ones. If the books are a bit much go to the sites other people have listed and have a read of them. Once again, they should cite references which can be checked.

yinekka,

fordham.edu/HALSALL/source/lat4-c3.html

There’s an excerpt on how leaders were to deal with non-Catholics in Catholic lands, according to the fourth latern council.

The website is very good…lots of original source texts.

Does the link work for anyone else? I couldn’t get it to work.

In any event, it would be more relevant to discuss the Church and non-Catholics in non-Catholic countries as India was and continues to be almost entirely Hindu with a Muslim minority. If Indians were “forced” to become Catholic by the Portuguese, why is India not Catholic today nor was it ever Catholic?

Histories aside, if you look logically at the likelihood of that scenario, it doesn’t fit. Forced to be Catholic=Still Hindu? I have seen the beliefs and events of the Church in my own lifetime distorted so obviously in the media TODAY when I KNOW from personal experience they are not accurate. I know this kind of distortion of historical Catholicism is also possible. So, looking at the end result, I don’t believe that Hindus were forced to become Catholic in Goa or anywhere in India. If a violation of the Indian people happened, that would likely have been from Portuguese soldiers who called themselves “Catholic” but clearly were not. And they would not have been “representing” the Church. If someone can find a document from that time issued by the Pope/Church regarding Goa that contradicts my conclusions, then I will stand corrected.

Ill give you a website but its filled with too much propoganda if you want I wouldn’t bother about it though.

The church supported hate during the crusades by merly issuing them.

The Crusades are a separate topic. But I would join you in a discussion about that, shadowcry, if you would like to start a thread.

Eden, I too would like to enter into discussion with Shadowcry but all I think he/she wants to do is to make global statements e.g. ‘I still believe the inquisitions were horrible’ or ‘the Church supported hate by merely issuing the Crusades’ and not defend them by discussing how he came to these positions. If you care to look at my replies to him/her you will see what I mean.

Shadowcry, you said The church supported hate during the crusades by merly issuing them. Could you explain what you mean by this statement.

Eden, I think you have a good point, but look at it this way:

for most of history, India has been ruled by Muslims…if islam demands forced conversion, why are most Indians still hindu?

Pro, I know next to nothing of Indian history before the British Raj. Were all of those maharajas who ruled India Moslem? Can you direct me to a site which can give me a simple over view of Indian history. 🙂

The Inquistition excluded those who poison the soul which is a far greater crime than poisoning the body. In any case the inquisition was not as “bad” as anti-Catholics make it out to be. I for one consider it a blessing and we are in need another inquisition in these days of rapant heresy. Recent research into the trial documents confirm this. Here are some good resources: thedavincicodedemolished.com/The-Inquisition.html

As to the Crusades they were necessary defence of Christendom against the Islamic hordes. Coming out of Arabia they invaded CHRISTIAN LANDS in North Africa and the Middle East. They even came into Eastern Europe and Spain and up to the gates of Austria. Good resources can be found here: thedavincicodedemolished.com/The-Crusades.html

This is so funny! Muslims are persecuting non-Muslims all the time and even want to destroy all other religions, and you have the audacity to make claims like that? Is this more of the famous Muslim taqqiya? Sure, sounds like it.

Frankly, this is nothing but baloney! Is this the stuff your imams and mullahs teach you?
