Ask him what Paul was doing in 1 Corinthians 5, in the case of the man living with his father’s wife. Wasn’t he specifically excluding him from fellowship with the Church?By “control salvation,” he refers to excommunication. He believes that one’s relationship with Jesus is just between one’s self and Jesus, therefore the Catholic Church gets in the way and has no legitimate authority.
Ask him what was the way that Jesus told the apostles to resolve disputes in Matthew 18. Didn’t He specifically say “get the Church involved”?
Your father might be well-meaning, but he’s either misinformed or is mischaracterizing the teachings of Jesus and the Bible…
WRT Constantine, ask him whether the Church is present in the “breaking of the bread” that is referenced in the NT. Ask him whether Paul’s writings to Churches (two centuries before Constantine!) demonstrate that the Church pre-existed Constantine.
