Mt. 18:18 - Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose upon earch shall be loosed in heaven.

Mt. 16-19 - And I will give thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heave: and whatsoever you shalt loose on earth it shall be loosed also in heaven.

Jn. 20:23 - Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

2 Cor. 5:18 - But all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Christ and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.

All Bible quotes take from the Douay Rheims Bible.

See, you are using the King James version of the Bible, which has verses subtracted. Though, Im going to step back and let others who know more then me address this.

Ok there are those who it is worthwhile to argue with and discuss and those who it isnt. I may not be the best to make this decision as being a little sarcastic but our brethren here is not going to be convinced and his language regarding our beliefs is what gets us all a little hot under the collar here on this forum.

when there is no point in beating your head pray for your brothers salvation, we know it is possible to be saved outside the church pray his anger and his views are not such that he will be led astray. I think otherwise we are about done here dont you all agree? There is no more point in this thread and we get no where when we are labeled disgusting by someone who does not even know the doctrine of papal infallability. the fact it has been used is it 2 or 3 times in the history of the church and the circumstancxes would be of no concern to him. We et no where we do him or ourselfs no good. Lets call this thread a night.

good night thread.

Ok at least we agree on something, the protestant church was not around. Now we have a basis for dialogue.

Is Jesus Lord and God? Does his word mean anything? If so you read the scripture thsat we interpret as founding the church and you have the succession from Peter.

Now unless you think Jesus could get it wrong? No? Then we have the above verses about tradition. Do they mean anything?

More later have to go for now but as long as we have one point we can agree on we can start there.
What passage is that. The one where he says on this rock i will build my church. Probably the MOST MISREAD QUOTE OF THE AGES. Lets break this down.

13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

So whats going on here. Ok. Jesus wants to know who people think he is. The apostles reply. Some say you are this some say you are that. Some say you are a prophet (note to muslims jesus was NOT a prophet). Then jesus say well who do you say that I am. And they say you are the CHRIST the SON OF GOD. And Jesus says yes God has revealed that to you. And I say to yout that you are Peter (its like me saying to my friend mike. Hey mike who am I. he says you’re Lance. yes and you are mike). That was confirmation not stating that Peter is the rock. but that JESUS IS THE CHRIST AND THE SON OF GOD. Faith in Christ is the rock. Not Peter.

And yes we have a point but I don’t think thats exactly a point that helps your case. Your boys in the vatican were killing up a bunch of christians and banning the bible before the reformation happened.

But Nephilim145, the problem is that you interpret scripture your way (or your particular protestant denomination’s way), but there may be 3 other Protestant churches within a block of yours that interpret those scriptures differently.

Now, who is the authority – every single Christian believer? Or did Christ establish a Church to be the authority over us all. A Church to stand forever, to resolve the disputes, determine doctrine, determine morals, determine even what should constitute sacred scripture?

It’s like once I had lunch on a presidential election day with a dear Christian sister who said, “God told me today to vote for Jimmy Carter.” and I replied, “God told me today to vote for Ronald Reagan.” haha

If Christians believe God “up there” or God “all around us” is telling everyone something different then there is no unity. Without unity we do no good but provide Satan entertainment. Satan does not care if people die and go to hell without God because of atheism, agnosticism, or heresy. I believe Sola Scriptura to be huge heresy. And people will die and go to hell for it, and those that taught it will be responsible for the false teaching.

Fortunately, Christ our Savior established his Church before he left. It has had its share of troubles, but the gates of hell haven’t prevailed yet. (and never will according to Christ).

I was raised with the sola scriptura, sola fide beliefs, but you know even as a little child it didn’t make sense to me that nothing was left in charge (so to speak) when Christ ascended to heaven. Our God is a God of order, and left us with a Holy, Apostolic Church, and he left us with HIS presence, his body and soul blood and divinity in the form of the Eucharist.

We invite you to explore Christ may be calling you to share in his Church and feed at His Table.

Gettin sarcastic isn’t going to hurt my feelings. I’m a US Marine I can and have had worse said to me. so what ever you got to say, say it. I will keep it respectful so long as it doesn’t grow hostile but sarcasm is a good debating tool.

The thing I don’t believe in denominations. God calls us to HOLY. Not Catholic, protestant, episcopalian, nazerine, islam none of that. Jesus called us to the true chuch which are those who believe on HIM. Not Mary, not the saints but CHRIST JESUS. I don’t interpret the bible I read it and what it says it means. I literally read the bible unless it obviously is using metaphors. I know and trust God would not send an ambigious word for us to read like the Gnostics think.

See, you are using the King James version of the Bible, which has verses subtracted. Though, Im going to step back and let others who know more then me address this.
Are you using the vulgate which has whole books added? What did the KJV subtract?

  1. I don’t have any objection. We take the word of God as his literal words. We don’t add or subtract to them. We recognize that interpretation is for God and God alone. This doesn’t disprove sola scriptura. This is a corner stone of protestant theology.
Junebug addressed this in her reply to you, and she makes good points. In looking at protestentism, who is to say one demonination’s truth is more correct then the other. You intrepet the Bible the way you want to intrepet it, but again one of the scriptures I posed to you teaches against that. If Sola Scriptura is correct, then answer me this. Why are there 33000+ protestant denominations and ONE Catholic Church? Lets simplify this question. In the US, in your average city, if you drive down the road you will see several protestant churches of different denoms. What makes your intrepetation different from say the Lutherans? Methodists? Baptists? Assemblies of God? Again, I refer you to a quote I heard that says you can take any seven verses from the Bible and to create your own religion with our own personal intrepetation. There is a reason why Christ established the Catholic Church and apostolic authority and succession. That said church is the one that put together the Bible you are trying to intrepet on your own.

So, then you are intrepeting the Bible on your own!

Again…

“First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

If you aren’t intrepeting in your own, who is your authority?

I was raised a Baptist, as a result I became agnostic,

i was raised in the Bible belt few catholics viewed as evil, weird etc.,

just so happened every girl i datd was catholic, I have great taste in women

went to church/mass with them found out your beliefs were not true, say what you want, but saying catholics worship mary does not make it true, we respect and love mary(by the way prds are coming around just been a speciual on history channel on this),

we dont pray to idols, we have scripture in our services.

I found faith through the catholic church and converted not because of marriage but because of God

I was diagnosed and had pancreatic cancer last year about this time exactly

God changed malignent tumors to benign tumores and saved my life

I have a very full life with god in the church and believe it is gods church, I believe protestants are wrong in their beliefs but hope you all go to heaven, as a church we do not tell God who is or is not saved, unlike some protestant denominations, we also dont limit the number who get into heaven like a lot of prtoestants, If I believed only 144,000 would get into heaven I would think I would have little hope how about you of all the peopel alive or who have lived are you one of the 144000 that some protestants claim is all that gets in?

Read about Martin Luther or Henry the 8th and see if those are the leaders of your church you want-not me as founders,

befoere you respond with child molestors and bad popes we are not perfect we are men we sin but the church is different than the people.

God bless take some time to learn about us instead of telling us what we do, maybe you had a bad experience or were not taught church doctrine if you believe what you espouse.

So how do you literally interpret this then:?

“First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

If you aren’t intrepeting on your own, who is your authority?

"Oh really you don’t? So why is it that there are images of the pope bowing in prayer before the image of mary? Why are their feast days dedicated to mary? Why do you BOW before the monsterance? Why do you say hail mary’s? None of that is biblical as a matter of fact God says that bowing before idols and making images to bow down to is evil. "

How to respond?
Matthew 23:24 You strain the gnat and swallow the camel.

It would be really nice (for Catholic apologists like me) if Peter was really saying that we shouldn’t privately interpret Scripture.

But that’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying that the *contents *of Scripture are not the product of the author’s interpretations of the events, but are rather divinely inspired by God.

Okay this post is about feast days – are you aware of feast days in the Old Testament?

The first Christians were Jewish, and their observances were very similar as well as their Church liturgy very similar as their Jewish beliefs. There were feasts and festivals in the Jewish religion and in the early Church, and continuing in the Church to this day.

Since you have read the entire Bible, I am sure you are familiar with the feasts of the Old AND New Testament?

Junebug is running to get her Bibles…yes, I have more than one 😉

Well thanks David for pointing that out…I’ll go grab some Scott Hahn books to double check that as well…but I’m always willing to review…😃

In addressing Neph’s attacks against the Papacy…

“And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter . . .” (Matt. 10:1-2).

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven’” (Matt. 16:18-19).

“‘Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren’” (Luke 22:31-32).

“He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, ‘So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas’ (which means Peter)” (John 1:42).

“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep’” (John 21:15-17).

  1. You bow, kneel, and pray before images (idols) of mary and the saints. That sounds a lot like worship to me. Kissing a person on the cheek is a far cry from bowing, kneeling and praying to them. I love my mother but I wouldn’t do any of those things to her.
First of all, if your mother was a Christian, you would ask her to pray for you. Prayer is not worship; it is communication. Second, why are you so much smarter than the first century Christians who venerated the bones of the martyrs and printed prayers to the dead martyrs requesting their intercession on the crypts? The written doctrine of the communion of the saints can be traced to the 4th century, when it was stated as part of the first creed which became the Nicene Creed, and was not rejected by Martin Luther, (who believed in the perpetual virginity of Mary, called Mary the Theotokos, and asked for her intercession throughout his life. Martin Luther even believed in the Immaculate Conception… but we de-rail. Let’s stick with the issue at hand, which is the communion of the saints. )

The communion of the saints is the belief that the Body of Christ contains all who are in Christ, whether alive or dead. It is a historical tradition of the Church dating to the 1st century, and is the request of Christians to the “cloud of witnesses” spoken of in Hebrews 12:1-2 to intercede before the throne of God for our requests. It is a request for prayer, just as you would ask someone to pray for you on earth.

So… if you ask your mom to pray for you, are you worshipping her? Wait… do you have graven images of your mother? Do you have pictures? Maybe you do idolize your mother. Hmmm…

How would I know that? And here we come to the crux of the matter. The reason why your accusation is bogus and entirely unfounded is because ***only God can determine ***whether or not a person idolizes someone or something, which means to place that person or thing above God. You do not have X-ray vision, dear heart, and you cannot and do not know the minds and hearts of people who you accuse of idolatry.
Exodus 20:4-5, Dueteronony 5:8-9, Leviticus 19:3-4, Leviticus 26:1-2 etc all DEPLORE making idols and bowing to them. You can call it what you want God calls it an abomonation.
Well, it certainly would be an abomination to worship statues in church. However, that doesn’t happen. What you fail to understand is that worship is not something that you get to judge is happening by observing behaviors. It is something that happens in the heart. HOWEVER, if you were more observant, you might notice that there is worship that goes on inside a Catholic church, and that worship is given in perpetual adoration to the spiritual body of Christ. Lighting candles and requesting prayer from a saint is not worship. It is a request for prayer.

So, what you’re left with is verses that regulate the behaviors of the Jewish people concerning the making of idols. Do those verses prohibit the creation of statues of saints (which are not idols, by the way.) Here is a succinct article that addresses each verse you quoted.

catholic.com/library/do_catholics_worship_statues.asp
  1. Where in the bible does it say to hold feast days to dead saints. God says in Exodus that he is a jealous God. So why anger him by paying the hommage due to him to sacred images?
Where in the Bible does it say to have Birthday parties or Christmas trees or Easter eggs. Where in the Bible does it say to go to a public Mass and disrupt services like a schizophrenic. (this is a reference to the YouTube videos posted at the beginning of the thread) Where in the Bible does it say it is permissable to drive a car.
  1. The hail mary is NOT a biblical prayer. “Hail Mary Full of Grace The Lord is with thee is”. later on “Blessed art thou among women and the fruit of thy womb is” but pray for us sinners and so on is something that come from the council of trent. NOT THE BIBLE. And even if it were biblical why are you repeating it up to as much as 50 times? Matthew 6:7 says "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. ". Jesus himself is calling that a nonsensical thing to do.
First of all, you are confusing the rosary with the Hail Mary. They are two different things. The Hail Mary is entirely Biblical, quoting Gabriel’s salutation and news of the Incarnation and Elizabeth as she was filled with the Holy Spirit when John leapt in her womb. Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death, is the only line that is not completely taken from the Bible. It is a request for intercession. How do you figure that a prayer that is not 100% based on scripture automatically becomes idolatry? I bet that would disqualify all of your prayers  You’re making lots of illogical leaps here. The only thing about the Hail Mary that is not in the Bible is the request for intercession. We request intercession because our forefathers have for 2000 years. It is a practice based on Sacred Tradition.
