Many of you have read, commented and prayed for me in my situation with my husband, and I appreciate it all very much. I am hoping that maybe some of you have some advice to give regarding another tricky situation in my life regarding a different family member.

My sister has had troubles her whole life - she was bounced around foster care for 18 months before being adopted by my parents. She had troubles in grade school, got into drugs and sex in middle and high school, and basically bounced around to different treatment centers until she graduated HS.

Things seemed to be better - she became an LPN, got married, had 3 kids… everyone was under the impression that things were going well, but with each child she had, things got just a little bit more shaky. She had c-sections with all of her kids, and ended up addicted to painkillers (she told me this, so it’s not me just guessing/accusing).

She started having really sporadic behavior - massive ups where she would be awake for days, the house would be spotless, etc etc. followed by incredibly crazy outburst of attacking people around her verbally about anything and everything. She accused her husband of cheating - turns out her evidence was that she thought he was calling a woman (the mother of their oldest daughter’s friend) after midnight, but it was after noon (she switched up AM and PM). This would be followed by her sleeping for hours… sometimes even 24 hours, waking up and being “normal” and acting like nothing had gone wrong at all.

Well, without getting into sticky details (mostly because it could literally be a BOOK), in one of her crazy outburts, she threw a bunch of tools at her husband and told him to leave (on Father’s Day, no less). He went out and sat in his car because the kids were inside and he was worried about them being with her - I believe he called the police at this point. She came outside and told him he better stay there because she had called the police on HIM, and “Oh, by the way, you just hit me. Enjoy jail for assault and battery on your wife.”

So this started off what has turned into months of just crazy behavior, a drawn out custody battle and divorce (because he was told that if he didn’t file for divorce, he would have no way to get the kids away from her). During this time, she has had at least two boyfriends that she has lived with (that we know of) and she insists that we treat these boyfriends and their children as part of our family. She has attacked both my husband and myself verbally (and through texts and emails) going as far as contacting my husband’s work and threatening to tell everyone she knows about my past (because of course my husband told her).

She gets mad if we see the kids while their dad has them. She gets upset if we talk to him at all (mostly because she tells him different things than she tells us, and she hates that we find out about her lies).

So, after all of the above, I guess my question would be - since she is my sister, do I need to, out of Christian love for family, continue to associate with her? Do I need to abide by her wishes to not talk to her husband (not her ex yet), or not see her kids when they are with him (she won’t let us see them when she has them either)?

I feel like we are “taking his side” in this, but she has a long history of lying, manipulating, and just being all out hideous to all of us. He has been nothing but nice in the 12 years they have been married, and has never told me something and said “well don’t tell your sister.” I don’t believe he cheated on her, and I don’t believe a lot of the stuff she says about him (mostly because I’ve seen paperwork that proves what she’s saying is a lie to get us to hate him)… but I feel guilty, like I should be on her side and supporting her.

Sorry this is so long. Family stuff is complicated.

Side note: yes, I do feel the kids should not be with her - from things he has said, from things my mom has said, and from things I’ve witnessed. It apparently takes a lot to have your kids removed from your custody if there are no outward signs.

Sounds like an undiagnosed mental illness. Too bad her husband didn’t insist on a psych exam during the custody battle.

No and no.

The people that matter are her children.

There are plenty of signs, it seems no one followed through with requesting a psych evaluation from the court.

Yep.

Getting a psych eval was part of the initial proceedings. She did get one, but there were no stipulations about who had to do it, so she chose someone who is basically her friend. She used to work at the clinic here (small town), and I kid you not, she has many of the medical professionals at this clinic completely believing the lies she tells. She wouldn’t even let her husband have a session without busting down the door to the room to say he was lying.

Her latest boyfriend has been texting me incessantly telling me I need to support her, she’s family. He swears that her husband isn’t paying child support (it’s being garnished from his check, I’ve seen the pay stubs), that he never spends time with his kids when he has them, that he’s raking my sister over the coals in this divorce and that he’s an alcoholic who spends over $200/week on alcohol. It just continues.

My husband is an alcoholic… and even HE doesn’t spend that much on alcohol in a week, even at his heaviest times of drinking (and his BACs were regularly in the .30+ area). I have personally never seen her husband have more than one beer. Not to say he couldn’t possibly be an alcoholic, but he has 3 jobs, all of which require driving the whole time he is on shift… and no one has every said a word to him. One of his jobs is being an on-call firefighter. He’s never missed a call.

Your sister needs help, but it doesn’t have to come from you and likely won’t make any difference until she self-identifies a need for it. Prayers for your family.

If your sister is being unreasonable (and she is), you don’t have to support her. You should really offer your support to her children and husband while they go through this. She is obviously in the wrong - it doesn’t matter that she’s your sister. If she wants to get help for her own mental state, offer her all the support in the world. If not, take a step back from her.

Will pray for you and your family.

Sounds similar to what my ex-SIL did to my BIL … So sad when there are children involved.

Sadly there is not a lot that can be done as far as getting the kids away from her . ( I’ve witnessed it in their situation… Unbelievable …. 😦 )

I will be praying.

If you listen to her you are going to affect the kids negatively. From what you have described her husband is a decent dude. If you let her bully you into segregating the family it will hurt them. Further more it will help her push him out and be less involved if she wins or gets them etc. She sounds like the type who will try the horrible “turn” the kids thing. If she has any success here are the outcones:

She “wins” and they grow up with negativity toward him, and eventually believe it and spend their life in a state of having missed alot with their “good” dad while having the emotional belief that he is a jerk.

Or she “wins” for a while and one day they realize what they lost with their father and can never get back.

The other option (and they sound lucky in this regard) everyone on both sides maintains the “family” for the kids and they win, not him or her. Either she eventually turns around and everything is in place to support the family, or she stays bad. If she stays bad it still hurts the kids, but has a minimal impact on the kids vs her bad poisoning the rest of their influential people.

Keep it a family, with or without her, she can join in or be destructive, whatever she does that support for her kids and her will be there in the right way and not her wrong way.

I’ll say she is the female equivalent of a man who doesn’t pay child support/care for his kids. Two different evils but both evil. She will as is make herself the victim every step of the way. He could pay all the CS and sendsend her an extra 500/month and she will say that she really needs 200 more and if he cared for the kids he would help them out. It is a mindset.

As to claims of his alcoholism and such again that is a motif. Sometimes you have 2 bad parents, but when it is only one, you either get a wife beating loon or a woman who pretends he is. Many divorce lawyers tell women to immediately claim alcoholism, violence/anger, and infidelity to, even if not proven, cast the “big bad scary man image”. I divorced a version of your sister and have been accused in court of everything listed and then some. Always skillfully done where there is no risk to making false claims. Idk how old the kids, but truth be told when they can talk well… these people get a rude awakening and if they don’t turn around they at least tend to tone it down a notch to avoid their own downfall. In my case my son hitting good talking age ended my ex’s claims after a stern judge gave her a stern talking to…

If she starts false CPS claims, it takes about 10 before they will do anything about it being false fyi. At least in my state.

I would not enmesh myself in this-you can be a support for her from a distance.

There is a lot of he said–she said- things going on between her and her ex. The truth may be somewhere in the middle.

This is just it - I want to believe her, because she is my sister (though I’ve got 31 years of her lying to me… my brain screams not to believe her). I find myself believing him, because I’ve never had it shown to me that he’s not telling the truth. BUT, I can see in this situation how he would have motivation to lie - she is going to all lengths to ruin his name in the community (but he has worked with the fire department, and thus with the police, and also works for the city - he has made a good name for himself and I don’t think she’s hurting him the way she thinks she is).

I said I’d avoid some of the sticky details, but I think they help show her character 😦
  • She lost her job (because she was caught stealing pain pills), but be darned if it’s not her fault - she claims he called the work and told them she was crazy and stealing things (they have proof she did it, so I guess if he called that’s one thing, but she DID do it).
  • So because she has no job, he has to pay for everything. At the same time though, she is going out of her way to find people to pay for things for her.
  • The school is paying tuition (she went to the priest with a sob story about how he was abusing her and cheating on her, etc - he has no reason not to believe her).
  • Some other local church is paying for part of the kids’ daycare.
  • She’s getting her rent on her apartment completely covered.
  • She got the kids on state medical care and is also getting SNAP (somehow she gets $700 a month on SNAP for 4 people - I was always under the impression SNAP was to help cover the basics and that was it).
  • Her cell phone is being paid through some agency. She was on my cell plan and wasn’t reimbursing me, so my husband (after his confrontation with her) insisted she no longer be on it.
The hard thing about this is that I really am most concerned about the kids. Her lawyer asked to speak with my mom and me in private, and expressed major concern for her mental health/well being and also that of the kids. When I explained a few things to him about how I’m not willing to just up an accept the things she says for truth, he made the comment that he thinks that I have “some vendetta” against her and that I’m not really looking out for her or the kids, that I’m too supportive of her husband.

I’ve gone to great lengths to make sure those kids are safe when I’ve been concerned. I’ve gone out and bought birthday party presents for the oldest so she could go to her friends’ birthday parties because her mom would just “forget” to send the invitation with her dad, in an effort to make him look bad. I’ve bought them all clothes, I’ve had them at my house, I’ve lent her money so she could buy things they needed, etc. I have nothing against her, I just want her to get help and I want her to not be trying to destroy my family. There’s no vendetta there - believe my I have deeply examined my feelings around this situation because I want to make sure I’m doing the right thing for the kids and that my motivations are from a good place.

It’s great that you’re looking out for the kids. Continue to do what you can for them, and see them as often as you can. Listen to them; be their safe space. Never trash-talk their parents, of course.

Don’t go out of your way to badmouth your sister, but don’t lie if asked about her. Of course you needn’t cut off all contact with her husband, but I would be very, very cautious about the amount and manner in which you see him; if your sister is as unhinged as your posts indicate, it won’t do you or him any good to seem to be “collaborating” with him.

Best of luck. I’m sorry you’ve got such a tough row to hoe.

I would only believe what I personally witness in this.

Your sister is not your responsiblity, however, I would speak to your mother to see if she can let your sister know that you all care about her and perhaps she needs to get some medication to help her get over this rough patch. If it is undiagnosed mental illness, it will be addressed at the appointment.

Just because someone needs help financially after a job loss or divorce, it does not make them a bad person. It seems the ex is trying to smear her too–don’t give him ammunition.
Just because he is a firefighter-it does not make him a good person either.

That’s why I would talk to your mother and that’s about all you can do besides pray and stay out of it. You have your own family to take care of…enmeshing in famly drama will take it’s toll. Of course be there for her kids, but nothing else right now.
