Is saying that God came down from Heaven and redeemed us by willingly giving Himself up as a sacrifice for our sins, essentially the same as saying that God gave us His son so that we may have a second chance?

Also, when we say that He paid for our sins, are those “sins” essentially Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden? Or are those sins every sin that each and everyone of us would individually commit, past present and future? Or both? 😛

Thank you 🙂

Yes.

All sins, past and present, are forgiven in Christian Baptism (and subsequently by Sacramental Confession). Nothing can forgive any future sin before the sin is actually committed (at which point it becomes a past sin).

David, thank you for your responses 🙂 they are always enlighting and easy to understand. So what is meant when we say that He paid for our sins? I’ve read that in redeeming us, He paid for our past present and future sins, BUT that that redemption isn’t applied to our sins unless we repent of them.

David has it right; Jesus’ suffering is not a “get out of jail free” card.

I just wanted to point something out that is very important to me:

Jesus didn’t die for a generic group called “sinners.” He knew/knows each of us individually, and each and every sin we commit (past, present, and future) individually, and what led up to them, and more.

Knowing this just makes me love Him more!

Essentially, Jesus offered reparation for the Original Sin committed by Adam. This Original Sin shattered humanity’s relationship with our Creator. Because Jesus was True God and True Man, He could reconcile humanity with divinity.
