It doesn’t matter what “mischief in the land is” in this verse because it’s not making a law for Muslims.

OK, now I’m totally lost! If this doesn’t apply to Muslims, then why are some Muslims frequently quoting the ‘if you kill one person it’s as if you killed all of mankind…’ (I’m obviously paraphrasing. ) - and please don’t make me look up all the threads where this was posted - hopefully someone else can back me up on this.

And, I’m sorry I missed your answer. I thought you said to check the Old Testament laws, i.e. Deuteronomy etc. Which I guess would make sense if this only applies to Jewish people?

The verse says that Allah made it this way for the Children of Israel. Islamic law is similarly specific when it comes to when the death penalty is to be applied. The verse about killing one person being like killing all of mankind–this is a statement to show the enormity of the sin, not the specific punishment for it.
