R rated Horror movies

I am going to ask this cause I care. I think I will know the answer. Since becoming Catholic which has been several years I have not seen any suspense movies. I am not a fan of Hollywood or the people there. I watch basically educational TV. NO sitcoms. I don’t have respect for the people of Hollywood either. But I have seen all the Saw Horror movies and loved them. The nudity I could take or leave. But the suspense of not knowing what was coming up next and gore, to me is indeed a thriller. Now am I not allowed to see Saw anymore if a new one comes out? This has been all prior to becoming Catholic.
 
I used to like the Return of the Living Dead movies when I was younger (up to about my mid 20s), but then I just could not stand the gore, to see those kinds of things happening to people. Ive never seen Saw movies because I know what they are about, personally I could not watch such horrific things being done to people, even if I know its all fake.

I cant even watch Shaun of the Dead anymore, (which most people consider to be a comedy), due to that one scene where guy gets grabbed by a big mob of zombies outside the bar window.

I find the gore of substance in a movie. After watching once, well it never has the same effect again. Unless I would forget all about it. The issue of nudity though it quite probably not questionable to the Church’s moral stance. I’ve never looked at the gore as “real”. I do get lost in the movie. But the 8 saw movies after seeing them do indeed have a substantive layered plot.

Been Catholic all my life and I’ve seen more horror and suspense films than I can count. Many more than once. I’ve seen horror movies with nuns. I saw The Exorcist with a priest. Guess God’ll have to take it up with me in the afterlife.
 
You have the freedom to watch whatever you want. But i want to add that you should not watch these types of movies all the time. Once and a while is o.k but dont get to attached to these types of entertainment.
 
All the SAW movies are on the IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base), with a parental guide.

There is no reason to see any of these movies. None.

There isn’t any teaching that I know that says you can’t watch these movies.

I have not seen the Saw movies. They aren’t my thing.

I know that the Saw movies are classified as being “Torture Porn.” I think you should ask yourself whether you enjoy watching people suffer. You might want to reflect on it.

There are suspenseful movies without gratuitous torture.

Non-gratuitous torture is still torture. Think of movies like this as meditating on mutilation and death. The Culture of Death.

I agree, I remember when the first one came out, I never watched it, but I did hear about it from different people, I could not understand how someone would want to watch people being put into such terrible, situations, another poster mentioned ‘torture porn’…I think that is a fitting description for such movies.

Its one thing to watch scary movies, the thrilling suspense is good, and sometimes you get a good scare from something unexpected happening, Like Vampire movies, I like these as long its not too brutal (Bram Stokers Dracula 1992 was VERY good imo), but to watch something or even create such a movie, where gore, torture, suffering is almost glorified, thats another thing.

I think the Saw movies were put out as a way to push it to the next level, they are always looking to make something MORE horrific, make the suffering MORE intense, etc. I remember Faces of Death when I was a kid, (which I stopped watching after 2 minutes) That was too much for me, but nowadays, that is tame compared to some of this!

I cringe to think how they will try to top the Saw movies!!
 
I don’t care for the gore in horror films either. I won’t condemn others for watching them though because I have seen Passion of the Christ several times.

I think Olrac has a point.

Also it might interesting to note that Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is still rated R after all these years.
 
I don’t like movies like Saw or Hostel. I don’t see how anyone wants to watch people die in such gruesome and painful ways. I find these movies in poor taste and wish they weren’t made. there is enough psychological sickness in the world.

I guess I don’t understand why you would need to meditate on the culture of torture and death. Doesn’t the culture of torture and death speak for itself?
 
Would you invite Jesus to watch this movie with you?

Why doesn’t the violence bother you? The profanity?
 
We’ve quit watching lots of tv for the same reason, it’s all smut and gore. I decided to watch Crimson Peak flying back and it was AWFUL. Smut and gore :/.

Lots of people think I’m snooty if I say I don’t watch a certain type of tv show? :confused::confused: Sigh…being apart in the world…oy

Why would not watching a certain type of show make you seem snooty? I think that most people respect a person who doesn’t do things based on their inner convictions and moral compass. I do. It is easy to follow the herd. People who try to rise above the herd by leading a moral life have their priorities in order.

There is enough violence and smut in the world. You only need to watch the news to find it. Not searching it out is commendable. Perhaps anyone who finds you snooty secretly wishes that they had spirit that you have.
 
I would just like to say i don’t enjoy movies like the exorcist or saw. I find these shows a little disturbing. But i would not condem others for watching these types of movies.

Personal opinions are one thing. If we are to be more like Christ, and less like the world, we need to consider what we are watching and listening to with discernment.

Gruesome and painful is the thrilling part. Otherwise it’s boring. Now there are other movies that are ok too. They don’t necessarily have to be gorey. But there better be a good story. The nudity in the later ones concerns me. The language is not great. But when someone is waiting to get their noggen busted. You want to jump up, run in place and throw your arms up an go round and round. 🙂

I never really thought of it as torture. It’s like a game. The doll says, “I want to play a game!” As far as death that’s part of life.
