First and foremost amongst those groups are Christians themselves.
Along with all the many thousands of Jews before and afterwards (and others elsewhere in the Empire) who were also crucified by the Romans, we’ve had the Christians ever since.

Romans crucified Jews and especially christians.
Roman Catholics crucified neither.

‘Especially’ Christians - where on earth do you get that idea?

As to Roman Catholics crucifying, no I agree, they had other means at their disposal.

Crucifixtion was not something religiously targetted in the Roman Republic and Empire. It was a secular torture/death sentence that was used for traitors and criminals of the lower end of the caste. Also I cannot provide a source at the moment but I believe it was either Emperor Constintine or Theodosius that banned the use of Crucifixtion as a means of death once Christinanity became tolerated or when it became the state religion.

Perhaps from the many accounts of Christian Martyr of which include Saint Peter himself; I would think that there were many named and unnamed Christians crucified during the mulitple periods of heavy persecution in the Roman Empire.

Also just a final remark, can’t any symbol be turned into a means of terror even if the truth of the meaning is one of peace? Before WW2 no one would of responded to seeing a swatzika, but now people approach it as a symbol of intolerance, hatred and genocidal racism. This goes the same can go for the star of david, or a crucifix, or any other religious and even secular symbol. All these have been used by humans and thus their truth can be corrupted for other means.

I guess no one has read the news posted above by another poster. THE RABBI WAS MIQUOTED.

Why continue the discussion?

Fraternally,

Actually, the later article provided says that the Post provided a “misleading quotation”. It does not claim that the Rabbi was “misquoted”. A subtle distinction, to be sure, but a distinction of some importance.

It’s good that the new statement resolves the specific issue of the Pope’s visit but it is foolish to pretend that the original fault was with the Post.

He also prevented other clergy wearing a cross from vising the wall…I hope he has a chance to meet our pope and see what a marvelous man he is…Perhaps the rabbi will see wearing the cross in a different light…if this happens…We are all a work in progress, and we all make mistakes
