That won’t change the problem we have now with the sexual abuse by the clergy. This is not the priority that our Pope has to solve or try to solve. He must focus on how to heal our church and avoid more sexual abuses by the clergy, which is a very difficult task.

“The church is now perceived as not being a champion of families because the scandal has hit with so much force,” Boteach said.

I fail to see the correlation between being a champion of families and the priest scandals.

And, while eating dinner together as a family is highly desirable, how does eating dinner together defuse the abuse crisis?

I said … ‘If the church embraces an initiative like this, which is positive, it could put a lot of the scandal behind it,’" Boteach said, recounting his chat with the pope

This is outrageous !
Is this the most important advice that Boteach could think of when discussing the rape of children with the Pope ? Crisis management ? Restoration of an image ?

What is this ? Are we to act like some sleazy corporation that is doing damage control ?

So, when the church has managed to “put a lot of the scandal behind it” what are we to do with those who had their youth and health stolen from them by the men they trusted with all their heart?
Shall we tell them to just put it behind them too ?
I guess these victims don’t rank very high on the good Rabbi’s list of priorities.

This is disgusting! I hope the Pope doesn’t take this flagrantly immoral advice to heart.

I don’t think people realize how destructive this scandal is to the Church.
This story is not going away. And it shouldn’t.

I think it may help to diffuse verbal abuse which sometimes leads to physical abuse because it allows families to disuss their day and work out solutions together. I believe it has really little to do with deeper issues in the family that need to be addressed by professional counseling and consistent prayer.

Dinners together also bring the family closer and give the parents time to see their children and become sensitive to any changes in behavior or pick up on problems that need to be addressed. If this is not instrumental fom the start then it may be more difficult to initiate as the children get older.

We have a family game night and dinners at our church weely which helps famlies and children get together socially and I think this diffuses any negativity within the family as well. It brings our parish community together in a positive way.

Anytime the family gets together and communicates with each other I believe is heathy and productive. Parents, I think, need to put their selfish desires on the back burner and focus more on their children and helping them to become good and caring citizens as well as good Catholics.

It opens the communication for the family to dicuss not only the scandle, but it also helps stop future abuse. I think the Rabbi made some good points, we need to just move on and grow from this experience and focusing on the family is a great start.

Yes, after cleaning house by getting rid of the offenders who either abused or allowed abuse to continue and making peace with the victims. Trying to ignore the scandal and hope it will go away hasn’t been very effective so far.
