Hello,
With the election of president Obama, the amount of racist and ethnocentric gossiping and backlashing has increased increased in my family. My family – especially my stepdad, my grandmother, and my aunt and uncle – has always spoke condescendingly of Mexicans and African-Americans, but it’s gotten worse. Now, I’ll admit that over the course of the past year alone I haven’t been the best myself, sometimes feeding jokes into the mix, but I don’t think that I’ve said anything to demean a minority’s humanity. If I have, then I apologize.
Regardless, I’m now and have been at the point where I’m utterly sick of all this negative talk about blacks and Mexicans, but I have no idea what to do or what to say in order to make it stop. All I know to do at this point is just pray for them and pray that it ceases. It’s just that I wish I could say something which would point out how wrong they are, how unloving and unChristian they’re being, but, at the same time, I’m hardly prepared for any sort of discussion regarding illegal immigration or welfare or the other socio-economic issues brought up when discussing minorities. The moment I get up the nerve to say, “They’re people too!” then everyone would say, “Yeah, we’re not saying they’re not, but…” and then go on moments later saying stuff like, “I can’t believe that we have to pay money out of our pockets to keep these people warm this winter…” like other human beings don’t deserve warmth and freedom from the elements.
I’m at an absolute loss.
I’m going to confession regarding this today – mostly going for the anger and the unlovingness which I harbor towards them as a result of this type of talk, but also because I lack the mercy to say anything, if anything could be said at all.
Please pray for my family…and me.
