Rally to protect public holidays from trading [CNAU]

Eighty people sounds like a small rally, considering the all the institutional backers mentioned in the article.

However, a few months ago, John Robertson claims to have been given a petition with 18,000 names in support of his efforts to stop the government’s proposal.
Opposition Leader John Robertson has today accepted a petition signed by more than 18,000 people opposing the O’Farrell Government’s plan to force retail employees to work on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the morning of Anzac Day.

The petition was presented to Mr Robertson by the ‘Take the Time’ coalition, which includes the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA), Finance Sector Union, Australian Workers Union, Unions NSW, Uniting Church, Salvation Army, Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and Newcastle Trades Hall.

“Under the O’Farrell Government’s legislation before the parliament, all retailers will be allowed to open on Boxing Day and stores will be allowed to have staff in store and working on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and the morning of Anzac Day preparing for trade,” Mr Robertson said.

My sense of the situation is that the proposal involves New South Wales, rather than all of Australia. But I may be wrong and hope more knowledgeable people will join the discussion.

I can remember when many states in the US prohibited most businesses from being open on Sundays. In Iowa, exceptions were made for hospitals and entertainment venues (television and radio stations, restaurants, movie theaters) but you needed to buy your gas or groceries on Saturday or you were out of luck until Monday.

Those sort of blue laws have faded from the US and I doubt there would be much public support for bringing them back.

Should the government forbid businesses from opening on holidays? Apparently that is the current situation in New South Wales. But is it true anywhere else?
