I definitely give Pope Benedict the full and final authority when interpreting “the spirit” behind Vatican II. I mean how many priests who are still in positions of authority within the Church today had anywhere near the involvement that Fr. Ratzinger had in the creation of that document?

“All other drafts - particularly those prepared by the preparatory theological Commission chaired by Cardinal Ottaviani – are judged by Ratzinger to be “too scholarly”. One draft he dismissed particularly vehemently was the text on the preservation of purity of the depositum fidei (“it is lacking to such an extent that it cannot be presented at the Council as it is”). As concerns the text on the “sources” of the divine Revelation, Ratzinger suggested substantial changes to its structure and content. Meanwhile, the drafts concerning Christian moral order, virginity, family and marriage are dismissed with arguments based on pastoral opportunities. According to Ratzinger these texts “overwhelm the reader with their excessive use of words.” The young professor form Bonn University stated that Council documents “should provide answers to more pressing problems and should do so, as far as possible, without judging and condemning, but by using a maternal language, presenting the wealth of the Christian faith and its comforts.””

The dismissal of the original documents (schema) pertaining to the course and discussions of the 2nd Vatican Council set the stage for those with an agenda towards major reform to take control. This has been well documented in several authoritative texts, and in part has shone how The Church wound up with the documents that were generated in the Council. Regardless of how one interprets the final outcome of Vatican Council 2, you cannot but acknowledge that the original intent of the Council was derailed.

And as a side note, strictly personal opinion, “without judging and condemning, but by using a maternal language, presenting the wealth of the Christian faith and its comforts.” has not worked out to well. There was a very definite reason that previous Popes used anathemas to ban practices and ideas. One might say youthful zeal overcame aged knowledge and reason.

Popes Paul VI and John Paul II both participated in Vatican II, yet neither has adopted as negative a view of the liturgical and other reforms as Benedict XVI.

Imho, after reading many documents from H. H. Pope Benedict XVI, you can see a transition from his youth to the current day.I believe His Holiness has matured, just as we all (most) do as we age. The liberties taken by some under the guise of “spirit of V-II” need to be corrected. The Holy Father is attempting to put things right. A very daunting task considering the amount of politics involved within The Church. Pray for Him!
