Raymond and Father's coverage

I have thoroughly enjoyed Raymond Arroyo and Father R.John Neuhaus’ coverage of the Popes visit to USA. In fact, I think their wit, humor (dry and otherwise) & observations are so good that they should become a roving team; the Arroyo & Neuhaus road show!
 
Their coverage has been wonderful this last week. However…

I really like Raymond Arroyo a lot, don’t get me wrong, but his perfect diction just sets my teeth on edge. I’ve heard him do talks where he’s not nearly as perfect as he is as an anchor and for me personally it’s much easier to listen. My :twocents:.
 
Thank God for EWTN!!! I am able to watch their coverage of the Holy Father’s visit from where I am and read the transcripts of his homilies and speeches.
 
I have very much enjoyed their coverage of the papal events here. I have been taping every event on EWTN since he landed. I agree that Arroyo and Neuhaus are great together. I have already learned quite a bit just by watching their coverage, and I can’t imagine that a secular outlet would compare in any way. I’m sure that the pope’s visit will eventually be released on a DVD at some point, but I will continue taping for the priceless EWTN coverage.

Yeah, his demeanor is a little unnerving. I think he “over acts a little” yet he does do an excellent job, and I am glad he is on EWTN.
 
I think they are marvellous and I think their choice of guests for coverage of different Papal events is top notch!👍 They are open, honest and bang on with their insights.

I have just one gripe. I think that Raymond needs to do further study as to when it is approcpriate to speak and remain quiet!!

He continuously spoke over the Papal National Anthem as it was being played on the White House Lawn, speaks as beautiful music is being played and at at times tries a little too hard to give complete coverage of every move being made!

Again it is only my personal preference at work here.

True, it irks me, also, but then I remember that this is also being broadcast on radio, where the listeners can’t see what’s going on. It’s a juggling act between video and audio coverage. I think he does it well, for the most part.

Perhaps non-Catholics are catching it on FOX. I have to say, I LOVE EWTN, but Fox has actually been covering a lot more of the Pope the EWTN from what I’ve seen - perhaps their budget is slightly larger. 🙂

I find myself watching Fox more than EWTN when it comes to the live coverage, and watching retruns on EWTN to hear Fr. N. and Raymond. You can tell Raymond is in his glory and is in heaven covering the Pope. Even though his Shakespearean background is in full swing with his words, inflections, etc., I can’t help but love him!

On Fox, I was worried Lauren Green would be doing most of it ( their “religious correspondent” - a non-Catholic who has written about the wonders of the Reformation), but they have actually brought in a few people who actually know the Catholic faith and many reporters have been sharing the stage. The anchors/reporters are doing better than expected too - aside from a few mis-speaks like “the Pope will deliver Mass” or “the service is about over”, and poor Shepard Smith promouncing “Papal” with a "short a’ instead of a “long a”, (aagh!) etc.

I think Fox News has given our Holy Father and the Catholic faith the respect it deserves. Please send them a thank you note if you’ve been watching them at all and appreciate their work. Bravo for FOX and EWTN!
 
Relatedly and belatedly, did anyone predominantly watch a secular outlet coverage other than Fox? I’d be interested to hear how cbs abc nbc covered the Pope’s visit. Any insights?

I listened some of the time via the radio.
I didn’t like the coverage much because it was hard to follow at times, especially their “jokes” and poking at one another.

It was much easier to follow when I saw a little of it on Sunday at someone else’s house.

Maybe it is a hard job to do anyway.
Just didn’t really like the two personalities, together that is.
 
I loved their coverage. I listened to several events on the radio, now I’m making my way through the rest that are on my DVR. I’ve never been one to listen to the pre-event chatter, but with them, it’s great. Father cracks me up–his delivery is so dry, yet some of the things he’s said are hilarious. It’s been wonderful.
 
Fr. Richard John Neuhaus was incredible! 👍 His comments were on target and were pretty much what a retired Joseph Ratzinger (had he not been elected as our Holy Father–I think April 19, 2005 was a glorious day) would have said had he been invited to cover these events.

A priest friend of mine told me that Raymond reminded him of PeeWee Herman :eek: (appearance), but, he liked Raymond, anyway. Raymond, though, does need some grounding and Fr. Neuhaus is the best one to do just that. Incidentally, I managed to get my call into the World Over when we were discussing the DC music and I found Raymond to be a great tag-team partner for some of the points I was making. However, as I was watching him, I couldn’t get the image of PeeWee Herman out of my mind. My priest friend was bad for making that comparision. 😃 But, I think that it was more like a separated at birth comment, more than anything else.

Nonetheless, both Raymond and Fr. Neuhaus were quite accurate in their assessments of what was transpiring. For those of you who may not have noticed, the commentators from Vatican Radio broke in from time to time to translate the Spanish proclamation of the readings and the multi-lingual general intercessions.

I thought the coverage was excellent…however, I did find some of the “banter” between Raymond and Fr. Neuhaus a bit annoying…in fact, I wasn’t overly fond of Fr. Neuhaus…he just said some things that sort of rubbed me wrong a few times.

But…I watched the entire coverage and some days…more than once. I loved hearing Pope Benedict and was so proud of the welcome he received…only wish I could have been one welcoming him!

I haven’t watched any of the network broadcasts but, at Washington, D.C. there were about 10-12 TV cameras set up right along side Joan Lewis of EWTN (I was seated not far from there). I was surprised to see so many there!
