Hello,

I am sponsoring someone who will be received into the Church this Easter. With the coronavirus and the expectation that public masses will be cancelled here in the UK, she is worried that if this is cancelled this year, she’ll have to wait another year to join the Church. I plan on asking Fr when I next see him (hopefully tomorrow).

My question is: can catechumens be baptised and be received into the church at a time other than the Easter vigil? Right now especially, she is very anxious to be baptised and received and she doesn’t want to wait another year.

Thank you and God bless you.

Not to worry. The Church has normative as well as extraordinary means of accomplishing this. Why not ring up the parish or archdiocese for guidance? The Lord said “Let not your hearts be troubled” and “My peace I give you”

I ask: is not one’s true love worth waiting for?

Given that we’re in an extraordinary situation, it’s reasonable to expect that extraordinary solutions will be made available. Keep Christ’s words in mind: “be not afraid”…!!!

Yes, at almost any time, with some restrictions, such as during Lent.

Wow… that’s a lot of catechumens! 😉

Our Bishop has decreed that the Triduum and Vigil will be limited to clergy and those being baptized. It will be a small celebration

Thanks all for your replies. My friend that I’m sponsoring is much relieved by this! She’s going to call the priest who’s preparing her for reception tomorrow. Extraordinary times, extraordinary measures and all that. God bless you all and stay safe.
