Has your RCIA program given you a Bible or a copy of the Catechism? As a catechist, I feel it is very important that each person has their own personal copy for personal use. I’d appreciate your comments - my request is falling on deaf ears at my parish. Thanks.

I never received either although we were advised about both and also shown the less ‘imposing’ Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It does seem a good idea although might be a little expensive if blessed with a large class…

We were given the Catechism the first day of RCIA. Near the middle of RCIA we received a Bible. There were a ton of pamphlets and articles that were very illuminating. I kept everything they gave.

Nope. Neither. They gave us links to the online versions. We are using Credo, so I received that textbook.

I already have several Bibles and I prefer the online catechism anyway.

No, they didn’t give us a Catechism. Lots of booklets and flyers and articles, etc. Once I joined the Church, the Church gave me a Bible and a crucifix. I eventually bought a Catechism. I do consider that with the time involved with the pastoral associate and a couple of assistant catechists, and then the welcome gifts, the Church has given me enough. I’m so happy with my church and my Catholicism.

In your case, maybe the church could purchase a number of Catechisms and the class could use them, leaving them for the next classes. That way, it wouldn’t cost them every year.

When I was in RCIA, we got a copy of the Catechism and the Bible. To be honest, I didn’t care too much for them, because I already had copies of both, and frankly mine were nicer. 😛 Plus my Bible had the translation I preferred (RSV-2CE).

I’d have thought that anyone who was sufficiently interested in the Catholic faith to be attending an RCIA course would already own a Bible.

We were given a Bible (NABRE) and the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults during the second meeting. We never got the CCC despite having a meeting during Mystagogy that covered how to use it (and did a fantastic job!), but they did have some for sale.

Back in 97 in RCIA they gave me a big hardback copy of the Catechism and I READ it 🙂

Yes, everyone in the process should have a Catholic Bible and a Catechism.

Do a fund raiser, ask the Knights of Columbus or other groups to donate. Take up a second collection. We converts would be thrilled to help!

I give each RCIA inquirer a Bible and the US Adult Catechism (put out by the USCCB)…

Same for each of our high school confirmation students (they get a teen bible and teen Catechism).

Perhaps, perhaps not. And probably not a Catholic Bible. I had a KJV from when I was a kid.

My thinking is that these are two text books (if you will) that the Catholic faith is based on - and I think it’s important that everyone in RCIA has this one foundation of information. I now have several Catholic translations. My sponsor gave the the CCC before I started RCIA and yes, I have and continue to read it. Here, I guess it would be a maximum of $50 per person for a Bible and the CCC.

I was given a Catholic Bible, but not a Catechism, but I did not attend a regular RCIA.

A Protestant Bible is still a Bible. When I was in the process of becoming a Catholic, I was often given Biblical passages to study – usually from the Gospels, sometimes from the Epistles, very occasionally from the OT, but not once from Tobit, Wisdom, or any of the other deuterocanonical books.

My group could buy the Catechism and a shorter Catechism at a discounted price. The big one is also on the internet for everyone to read.

During the second year we received the NT during the Rite of Welcome. A book about the saints and as a present from the parish when we were received into full communion a smaller icon of the Trinity. Other groups were given a book as a present. I guess it depends upon how many that are received and what the book shop has in stock.

When one of the priests in the parish passed away there was some money either royalty fees or collection during his funeral mass or something else. That money is used to send all the adult converts in the diocese a book about the Catholic Church that he wrote. The priest spent most of his service teaching ethics at university level.

I was given a copy of the Catechism and a NABRE Bible on the first day of RCIA. We also received multiple booklets.

I give each RCIA candidate and catechumen the US Catechism for Adults, the universal Catechism (the big green version since it includes the indices and glossary, unlike most of the pocket versions) and a Catholic Bible. This year, I went with the Didache Bible since it includes commentary based on the Catechism.

Everyone gets a Magnificat subscription for the year, too. There are also handouts every week (mostly from the ACM RCIA materials, and some of my own making). At Easter, everyone will get a crucifix and a rosary.

I also give out other materials as needed. I had a stockpile of Scott Hahn’s “A Father Who Keeps His Promises”, so I gave those out when we talked about Salvation History.

I tend to go overboard. I just want to make sure everyone ends up with all the Catholic essentials. 😁

I don’t give out everything all at once, though. I learned that after the first year. It’s a little too intimidating. 😝
