In ours, there were several who were making this journey in spite of the wishes of their families and friends. Those people became very close during the year process. And of course, there is always this forum as well.

One of the things we did was start a Facebook group for our parish RCIA group. That allowed us to connect outside of the weekly meetings especially early in the process when no one really knew each other. You might consider that if you are interested in connecting with others.

I haven’t discussed it with my parents yet but am quite certain they will be upset as well when they learn I am converting. Even though they have not been particularly faithful in church attendance for as long as I can remember they are staunchly Protestant. As an older adult I don’t feel I need their approval but do intend to discuss my conversion after things have progressed a little further only because I don’t intend to be a secret Catholic. I love and respect my parents but this matter is too important for me to be overly concerned about their opinion.

I am in a similar situation. I have discussed my process of converting with my mom and she seems to be alright with it. However due to some issues between my father and I, I feel that it is best I do not discuss my faith because over the past several years he has…shall we say tried forcing me to believe his religious views which honestly contradicts himself and I completely do not agree with his views. I respect my father because he has gone out of his way to help me out over the past few years when I have been searching for a good solid job but the way he has treated me in regards to my faith its best I slowly move towards my independance. I know he is human just like everyone else and we all are not perfect, I just hope he accepts my decision on converting and I will still love and respect him as a father if things do not turn out good.

Yes, we definitely share similar circumstances. I expect my mom will accept it in time but not so sure about my dad who is borderline anti-Catholic. Hopefully we can just agree to disagree when the time comes and like you I don’t plan to allow it to negatively impact our relationship. Mostly he is misinformed about the Catholic faith and maybe I’ll be able to clear up some of his misunderstandings in time.
 
I loved it! we met at 7 and we talked about all the different things in the church and showed us what everything was. The people are great too, I think I’m going to enjoy it there. I love the fact that they actually have RCIA to learn.

Good to hear! I assume that Dolores Fredricks did most of the tour of the Church? Her family was in the parish back when it was a mission of the Dominican Order and they only saw a priest once a month. Her and her husband, Deacon George, are absolutely wonderful people.

One thing that I am really happy to say is that Kendra teaches straight out of the Catechism. There is no softening of issues or watering down of the truth of the faith. Unfortunately, I don’t think that is as universally true as it ought to be. But at least you know you are getting the real deal when it comes to Doctrine.
 
Thanks to Balian and TexasMavs1985 for sharing their situations. I am in the process of converting to Catholicism from a family of Baptists. My extended family are pretty much all baptists on both sides. I did have a Catholicism talk with my parents yesterday, but I did not tell them I have begun the conversion process. I was able to share what Catholics believe regarding the Eucharist, and I touched on biblical evidence against sola fide. It went well.

Today when I tried to approach my mother (again) about Catholicism, she said “why are you running to a chuch that so many people are leaving” and “their doctrine is not sound.” Then she hung up the phone and wouldn’t let me defend myself. I’m so frustrated. I want her to realize that as a Christian, she should be encouraging whatever is drawing me to seek the truth and read the Bible and learn about Church. Instead, she’s pushing me away. I feel so alone in this thing. 😦

First of all, you are not alone. You are joining over a billion people who embrace the teachings of the one true Church established by Christ himself. Secondly, it will likely take some time for your Mom to come to terms with things. At some point, I would invite her to a Mass. Most non-Catholic Christians have no idea what happens in Mass, how much of the Bible is read, how the prayers come out of Sacred Scripture, etc.

If she doesn’t come to terms with it in the short run, she will figure it out in the longer run. There are a ton of people all over the world in RCIA going through exactly what you are going through. Again I state that you are not alone. God the Father is with you, Christ is with you, and the Holy Spirit will soon dwell within you when you are sealed with His gift at confirmation. In addition, Parishes of the faithful all over the world will be praying for you throughout the process.

If I might make a small suggestion, consider trying to pray the Liturgy of the Hours from time to time. I find that praying with the words of God in the psalms and knowing that all over the world the universal Church is praying the same thing with me, helps me to focus, but also to see the true scope of the Church and that we are all one body in Christ. Secondly, if you have not already done so, try to get to know your RCIA team and your fellow inquirers outside of class. You are all in this together and having a social network that understands what you are going through and why you are doing it will likely be a great help. Our RCIA group got very close outside of the program by simply starting off with things like grabbing breakfast after Mass and going out for a drink after class. Those small things morphed into larger friendships built on a commonality that we shared of trying to come into the Church.

I started RCIA classes last Thursay! I’m really excited. The first day was mainly meet an greet!

Congratulations! I attended my second this week and we started the actual class. Last week like yours, was mostly a get acquainted session. Best wishes.

Thank you Joe. I’m really enjoying it and learning a lot. We have a great group and great teachers. I’ll certainly be updating as it goes along.

Congrats!! Im excited to start mine as well. Unfortunately I have to find a parish because Im about to move back to Washington when I get out of the army in 2 months and where Im going I have never lived before but I think I found a good one ill have to check it out when I finally get up there. I hope you have fun 🙂

Thank you for your kind words. Right now, I just won’t press the issue with her. God will work in His own time. Also, I started making videos about the process. I DOUBT that these will ever see he light of day on Youtube but it’s therapeutic for me to speak about what I’m going through. I’m also journaling about my experiences too.

I will check out the Liturgy of the Hours too.
