Hi,

My oldest son is going through the process of First Communion/Confirmation. This is his second year in RE. Unfortunately, we’re (my husband and I) are learning right along with him as we are currently involved in RCIA/conversion. I was brought up Lutheran–husband did not have a particular religion to speak of (long story).

At any rate, one thing suggested as part of his learning experience was to make a home altar. I told my son I thought it would be a great reminder to everyone (especially me) that we need to behave and remember our duty to God throughout the day.

To that end, we picked out a crucifix and added it to some prayer cards/candles. I’m not sure if I’ve done any of it right or if there is a particularly right way.

Here is a picture of what we came up with:

I welcome any thoughts of people more knowledgeable than myself in the matter.

Thanks in advance!

God bless 🙂

You’ve done great - I like the flowers :yup:

There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules with such things of course. Part of the fun is adding to the collection as you go along, so keep on the lookout for nice religious items.

Personally I’d like to see a rosary there for each member of the household - that one looks a little lonesome on its own, and seeing them there just before you leave the house can remind you to put one in your pocket and take it with you!

If you have any Bibles or prayer books it might be nice to have them on your altar too - or even other spiritual reading.

Good to hear that! Thanks! I was afraid I might be making a mess of things and confusing my son. We’ve been attending Mass for the last few years, but I still need the Sunday Missal with me.

My rosary typically, during the day, can be found in my car as yet another reminder. I need a lot of them. 😊

It’s lovely. I don’t like ours right now (well, we have 2 one upstairs and one downstairs in the playroom), they are not used as often as I would like because we have a 15 month old who would tear it all apart, lol, so they are both kind of out of the way.

Be sure to have your candles blessed and let your son pick out a few things to put in the area. Also, have plenty of age appropriate books about the faith for him (and you, too!) maybe in the same area. I also agree that a few more rosaries would be good to hang there for ease of use and a reminder.

Welcome home (we’re converts, too!)!!

Ours is actually right in our kitchen so everyone has to pass by it everyday. I’m really glad the builders decided to put that little niche right there.

Our daughter is 15 months old, too! I know what you’re saying!! LOL That’s why the Guardian Angel candle and the St. Jude candle are in the vase with the beads. They’re the only ones she can almost reach and the beads make it too heavy for her to push around. I knew if I left just the candles alone she’d push them over. So far, she leaves the crucifix alone.

What we’re going to do when she gets taller, I don’t know.

She’s actually being surprisingly good about it. She just squeaks a lot when I light them.

Our biggest problem is actually her scaling bookshelves and tables and things. She can’t get a foothold over there so she just leaves it (I think).

BTW, I love your tag. That’s my superpower, too! 😃 Well, for now. Baby is starting to wean herself, but we’re hoping for another little one in the future.

I told my husband I like even numbers, but I haven’t figured out if that means 4 or 6, yet. We were both onlies and I LOVE big families. 😉
