Out of the Ashes: Rebuilding America, Anthony Esolen

The first book I have purchased new in ten years.

The rest of my collection – hundreds of books – has been purchased used for pennies. But I’ve heard Esolen speak on Youtube again and again and I know he’s worth it.

Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber, the first novel in Weber’s Safehold series.

Reading Housekeeping, a novel by Marilynne Robinson. I saw it mentioned on a list of great novels by Christian authors. It truly is wonderful. Her prose has, I don’t know how to describe it - I feel as if it was sculpted, rather than written, each sentence is so carefully shaped and balanced. She has a great way with characterization as well.

I just finished Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
Just started *Armada *by Ernest Cline

Just finished Out of the Ashes, now skimming through a brief history of the Mongols in Central Asia.

my book of choice is an audiobook right now…Elizabeth Of York by Alison Weir. Elizabeth was Henry VIII’s grandmother

I heartly recommend anything by Michael Burt, real name George Mattock Brookman Burt and his “detective” Roger Poynings novels: The case of the fast young lady, The case of the angel’s trumpet, The case of the laughing jesuit. They are absolutely fabulous. Chesterton level of quality. They are maybe the best books I have ever read. They deal with the supernatural, and satanic forces, from a Catholic standpoint, so they are not strictly crime fiction, but some books are, more than the others.

I’m halfway done with that one. I’d been letting it age properly and this year it was ready to be read.
Just finished re-reading Brideshead Revisited and followed with the 11 hr. miniseries.
Now finishing Elizabeth and working on Timon of Athens by the bard.

Just finished the “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” trilogy. Quite enjoyed it. Now to see how well they translated that to the screen.

Just received Reclaiming Catholic Social Teaching by Anthony Esolen and The Church and the Market by Tom Woods. One is a traditionalist and the other a libertarian, so this should prove interesting.

Just finished The case of Caroline Animus by Dana Chambers. Excelent crime story about an owl carrying a message about a woman named Rita who rests forever under the green waves. What can it mean? Excellent story and unfolding mystery beautifully told keeping the interest of the reader until the very end.

"La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades’ by anonymous, annotated critical edition by Chad M. Gasta.

Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime

The first of a 19-novel series where the Star Wars galaxy is invaded by aliens from outside called the Yuuzhan Vong. A major movie character is killed during the opening novel, threatening to split the Solo-Skywalker families apart.

The Book of Fires (a Brother Athelstan Medieval Mystery), by Paul Doherty

and

The Nonviolent Life, by John Dear

The History of Saint Augustine, Florida, William Dewhurst

Exciting Spanish-French colonist-killing so far…

(Planning a trip there in late May. :))
