I am reading “Recollections of Joan of Arc” by Mark Twain. I think it is the best book Mark Twain ever wrote, and it is one of the best books I have ever read. I just know that I will hate the end though. Mark Twain spent over 10 years of his life researching Joan of Arc even though he was a devout atheist.

I am nearly finished with “The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels,” by Alex Epstein.

Now, for a change of pace, I am reading the memoirs of Alexander Feklisov, who had a lengthy career as a Russian KGB agent working in the U.S.and Britain. As the KGB station chief in NYC and chief Soviet spy, he recruited numerous Americans sympathetic to communism to obtain government and industrial secrets for him to transmit to Moscow. He was quite successful at this. I’ve only gotten a few chapters in, but it’s interesting reading. The Russian title of the book is “Memoirs of Alexander Feklisov, The Man Behind the Rosenbergs, KGB Spymaster Who Also Controlled Klaus Fuchs and Helped Resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis.”

The English edition title was shortened to “The Man Behnd the Rosenbergs.” It seems that Russians like long titles. They should have just titled it “Memoirs of Alexander Feklisov,” but I suppose nobody would buy that because nobody knows who he is.

I just read The New Geocentrists by Karl Keating. I need to be respectful of Mr. Keating given that this is still basically his forum, but it is not what I expected from him. I would have preferred that he proffer arguments against geocentrism from science and theology in lieu of mainly attacking some of the geocentrists and trying to ridicule them. He does make a few weak arguments on the main topic, but most of the book is devoted to trying to discredit some of the geocentrists based on issues not related to geocentrism. In any case he is taking a pretty bad beating over at Catholic World Report, and I hope he has learned his lesson.

Interesting. I hadn’t heard of the book until now. The Keating interview with CWR can be found here.

*The Church Under Attack * by Diane Moczar

From the description
Here’s an unabashedly Catholic history that documents scores of sustained and unprecedented assaults on our Catholic Faith these past five centuries and delineates our Church’s brave response to each one.

I will add that she is an easy writer to read. She also inserts some humor occasionally, for example, in talking about the two French kings of the 17th century, she writes “The bad news is that they are both named Louis (we can tell them apart by their last names, which are Roman numberals: Louis XIII and Louis XIV).”

Just started “The Letters of Fred Allen.” An incredibly witty letter writer…

I just finished The Adventures of Henry Thoreau. Thoreau used to be an icon of mine, but now that I’ve embraced more traditional religion, I’m not sure what to do with him! The book looks at the man behind the icon, focusing more on his life – his interactions with family and friends – than his writings.

Right now I’m reading Arise from Darkness by Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Chalk Talks on Alcohol by Fr. Joseph Martin.

To Ride a Silver Broomstick/ Silver RavenWolf

Diary of a Witch/ Sybil Leek

I read “The New Geocentrists,” by Karl Keating. It was interesting, but I just can’t get excited by Geocentrist controversies.

Now, I am reading “Not God’s Type,” by Holly Ordway.
